All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

D’rats have wasted no time in the process of unarming citizens. There have been numerous articles seen this is ongoing. There will be CHAOS and push back soon if this does not cease.

I hope so! I hope people don’t just hand them over weekly. In another couple generations I have no doubt they will. They are being taught to be socialists in the schools. But it looks like for now, even in the liberal states, people are not complying. Makes me so proud.

About 10 years ago, the cooking thread had a lively discussion
regarding cast iron, cooking in it and the
cleaning of it. Last year, this thread followed suit.

We spoke of certain foods which are not compatible
with cast iron, such as tomatoes.
How to clean the pot; would this be the best pot
and can it be used safely.

This last week a video was seen which might be of interest to those who participated in this discussion.

After cooking, cleaning
the pot
is of the utmost importance. Once clean, seasoning the pot, just as
important.

BTW, this you tuber has some decent cowboy meals
included in his collection as well. His Root
Beer potatoes and caramelized onions is one for the books.

This is your ping to the All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics Thread

We are at post #966 now, so check in to see what is new!

This is an ONGOING thread, meaning drop in when you want and chat. There is no one topic or story, but ongoing sharing with prepper friends. I figured I’d see how granny’s thread scenario worked out, if anyone was interested in an ongoing thread vs. a weekly one.

If you want off/on this list, just let me know.

This week’s topic is How To Prep for Ongoing Health Issues.

I figured this would be a timely topic for me. And also brought up some concerns about prepping that had been bothering me. I’ll explain more in the next post (trying to keep this short for everybody’s inbox) Come on by if you can; I can use some advice!

Wow – I see January 11th was the last time I posted here! Sorry to have jumped off the radar without explanation.

January 25th is a day that will live in infamy in my mind – the day my cornea neuropathy started. I had never heard of such a thing, and I just thought I had dry eye from hell, with a suicidal level of unrelentless pain. Come to find out 8 months later, it’s a rare disease that is now treatable by less than a handful of doctors in the US.

I feel blessed to be in the US even more than ever now. The only research for CN (corneal neuropathy/neuralgia) is being done by a few doctors here. And 99% of the treatments for dry eye have been developed in the US. Without a free market where doctors are allowed to research and create innovative therapies, people like myself would still be suffering and hopeless. The nonstop pain from CN is ridiculous, I can't even explain how bad it was. Many people have committed suicide because of it, it's easily the worst pain I’ve ever felt. This video explains the symptoms and one of the causes (lasik surgery, but it can also stem from other things like dry eye, photoradiation, etc). Cornea Neuropathy Video

What does this have to do with Prepping? Ok, nothing really. I was just being a bit self-indulgent, plus explaining my long absence. I think there will be few ways to prep for rare medical emergencies – although it would be a good topic for a later date.

Right now I want to discuss known medical issues we all currently live with, and how are we prepping to be able to handle those should the SHTF.

An issue I’ve had since I was 6, maybe even before then, is severe myopia. I prepped for it by having backup pairs of glasses – keeping my old ones, getting a duplicate pair when I found a sale, etc. But how to prep for any unexpected vision changes baffled me. The only thing I did was have some silver set aside to pay for new glasses, if the facilities to have them done were still working. Luckily, being older, my vision had been getting more stable not changing at all in the last 4 years, after having strabismus surgery. But shortly before I went to Boston to see Dr. Hamrah (he's in the above video, BTW, a brilliant physician), my vision started deteriorating even more than normal, at an accelerated pace. I went from 20/20 in August to 20/50 in October to 20/150 in November with the same pair of glasses. I was diagnosed with Keratoconus (a corneal irregularity that distorts vision) and I figured my ability to survive a SHTF scenario was now nil. Then it was discovered I don't have Keratoconus after all, but cataracts! I finally have an eye issue that everyone else gets! I feel somewhat normal for a change. It was an emotional rollercoaster, but I’m happy where the ride ended.

So in a strange way, my myopia problem with prepping is being solved – cataract surgery will give me the normal vision I’ve never had. And I can stock up on readers much easier and cheaper than my old thick glasses. (I’ll likely have cataract surgery early next year After Dr. Hamrah clears me to have cuts on my cornea (yikes! Putting it that way doesn't sound good at all) – But it'll be 2020, LOL. If anybody has advice about the surgery, lens choices, etc , I’d appreciate it.

What kind of ongoing medical issues do you have or does a loved one have, and what have you thought of to prep for it?

I’ll start (as if I haven't been long-winded enough!)

Thyroid – I am hypothyroid and need a generic synthroid medication daily. I’ve accumulated about a year's worth of extra medication. Potential problems: when I need a dosage increase or the year runs out. I have no remedy for that.

High cholesterol and blood pressure – hubby takes daily medication for it, My suggesting he figure out how to obtain extra has fallen on deaf ears. My only thought has been our post-SHTF lifestyle will be full of hard work, exercise, and eating healthier so maybe those medications won’t be needed. Lame, I know, but it's all I got!

Yes, it works....it’s called Deadly Vision.

Nothing to do with prepping, I just find it very interesting of course. Anyone that’s had LASIK surgery or is considering it might also.

But we certainly can be thinking about how we’re going to handle medical emergencies in a prepping situation. Some will be easier than others.

Glad to see you back, and sorry you went through the illness, but also glad you found relief!

So Lasik surgery can cause CN?? Will have to research that!

It’s good to have a supply of thyroid meds when TSHTF, but don’t worry too much about running out since my doctor said it’s like turning a big ship around; thyroid meds take a while to make a difference (as well as not taking them would take a while to make a difference).

That makes sense, since every time they do an increase I don’t have a blood test until 3 months later.

So my wife went to the eye doctor for a routine exam recently. Two weeks later she was having laser eye surgery to fix a problem she was born with, it would have eventually blinded her at some point randomly. No pain, silent disease. Amazing stuff those lasers can do. God bless America and thanks Lord, I appreciate the blessing we receive and how I never have to use this prepping information. .

It looks like I am 2 hours to the north and east of Cosby. I had to look it up. Looks like a beautiful spot there, in the Smoky Mountains. I’m actually in the most northeast corner of Tennessee, right by Virginia and North Carolina. In the Tri-Cities area.
