All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
vanity | 2/26/18 | CottonBall

Posted on 02/26/2018 12:12:20 PM PST by CottonBall

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

Purchase what we use, what we need. Most Prescriptions purchased in three month supplies. As a rule, we normally attempt to keep a ‘back up’ for items we use on regular basis. As we deplete one item, there is another in the pantry, bath, laundry which would be used. An attempt to replenish before we are completely without. Laughing, we call this our ‘overstock’.

We used to laugh at granny’s stock of tp and paper towels. nearly 1000. Yes, we counted. I’m not laughing anymore.

A question on oils, like olive oil.

I know they can go rancid.

What’s their shelf life in an unopened container?

I’m thinking especially of something like Berio Olive Oil that comes in those big cans instead of plastic bottles.

That’s a good question. i’ve had oil that was a year past the expiration date and it was fine.

This website says 2 years:
https://preparednessmama.com/cooking-fat-storage/
“Olive oil can be stored longer than most other oils and as long as it’s stored properly it will last the longest of these 5 oils – about 24 months.
To avoid it going rancid before you can use it keep it cool, out of the light, and tightly capped so it is not exposed to the air. Extra Virgin Olive Oil will last the longest. “

Quite by accident came across these 2 sites. Some here might find these to be of interest

I’m going to have to do that when I get my shipment from China. I ordered some things that have pictures of a Yorkie on them, took forever to find something that actually looks like my dog. Ordered it from Amazon but it’s going to take two to three weeks to get here, so obviously from China.

We used to laugh at granny’s stock of tp and paper towels. nearly 1000. Yes, we counted. I’m not laughing anymore.

I once saw a photo in a magazine of a bathroom where the owners had installed a wall of lucite far enough from the structural wall to hold hundreds of rolls of toilet paper, with the round sides and cores facing the room. It looked decorative, but also acted as insulation for the wall. There was a hinged lucite flap at the top to drop replacement rolls in, and a flap at the bottom to pull a roll out. The rolls settled downward like a honeycomb.

I have a question.

Sometimes I’ve seen on FR threads the advice to put Hydrogen Peroxide in one’s ears, to guard against cold and ‘flu.

I have to get my ears cleaned out next week, and the doc told me to put H202 in my ears for several days prior to my appointment. So, on his advisement I figured that it was safe to do, and have been doing it. (It’s all very ‘fizzy’, seems to go on forever, but doesn’t hurt or seem to have any side-effects.)

I know that the ears, nose and throat are sort of connected, but I’ve never understood the thinking behind the notion that this could protect one from colds/flu.

Can anyone help me to understand the thinking behind this?

I don’t know.

I have not investigated that at all.

I would like to learn about it, too.

Maybe someone who has posted about it previously will respond.

(Someone else suggested swabbing the inside of the nose with H202, upon indications of cold or’flu; I understood that idea a little better.)

Well, I find a lot of websites promoting it for colds and ‘flu; but no promotion by actual physicians, nor anything from the ‘Great God SCIENCE’.

(Of course, the stuff costs a couple of bucks per bottle, and I don’t think that it’s ‘patent-able’.)

Here are some links:

https://earthclinic.com/remedies/hydrogen-peroxide-therapy-benefits/colds-flu/

https://www.simplyandnaturally.com/put-hydrogen-peroxide-in-your-ears-to-stop-cold-and-flu/

(I’m not a doctor, don’t play one on TV, and to the best of my memory have never stayed in a Holiday Inn. Use at your own risk. I just wanted to get my ears cleaned out, and became curious about other purported uses for H202 when my doc told me to do this and I happened to look it up :-)
