I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

40 Years of stuff! Yeah that’ll keep you busy. When we moved I moved everything from my 3000 square foot house to the 1600 square foot house. What Was I Thinkin! I have boxes upon boxes in the basement. As we finish remodeling one part of the house I need to go through the boxes of stuff that belong there and just get rid of the rest. Right now I’m hanging on to it but for no good reason.

I look forward to rummaging through that cookbook! Thank you for the link. I love old cookbooks, I usually end up looking at the kitchen stuff when we go to an antique sale.

Box w/cookbooks found, but not yet able to unpack, (not till kitchen is done) Unable to find a few items thought packed but probably tossed thinking who needs that?

Hope to start the second half of renovation soon (per DH) Will be Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious to have more cabinets/counter top work space, gas range, DW. “Good things come to those who wait”. Yep, that’s what ‘they’ say. :-/

Cookbooks - thoroughly enjoy thumbing through these. Half Price Book Store (used books) here in Dallas would be a stopping point for my sister and me. We’d spend hours searching through the recipe book section. Found a number of Southern Living “Best of” cookbooks. A wonderful day well spent, browsing.

I love used book stores too.

But I’m still looking for box #190! It has the majority of my cookbooks and I swear I’ve checked every single box already. It would be my luck that it got left behind or fell off the truck, while the boxes of snowmobiling clothes and fake fruit made it here just fine!

Have some! More countertops and cabinets and appliances will be great! You get to pick out your cabinets and countertops? That was the best part of our kitchen remodel, it got to look exactly as I wanted it. Well not exactly, that would have been too expensive. I did have to compromise.

Honestly, really don’t know (exactly). Made with yeast, it does ferment much like wine; giving it a ‘fizz’ described at the link. Made with tea and fruit juice/fruit.

New cabinets and countertops:

I’ve seen nothing thus far that yanks my chain. Partial to sleek, floating shelves rather than wall cabinets (bit of a ‘klutz’ here and too many opportunities in leaving the doors open, hitting my head!)

Base cabinets - would prefer doors and some with large, deep pull out drawers for larger items making them easier to find.

There will definitely be more lighting. Kitchen duty at the moment is akin to working in a cave. Not pleasant at all and with two ‘cooks’ we constantly are in one anothers way.

At this point in time, ANYTHING would be acceptable just to have it done.

I suppose any prepping thread would be remiss today not talking about what kind of things would be store to treat illnesses or possible global virus outbreaks.

What kind of things are you storing that would be helpful? Or what would you recommend that other’s store?

I have quite an old selection of fish antibiotics. I don’t even remember why I picked the types that I did. But it certainly is time to restock. If anyone has suggestions I would love to hear it.

I wonder if they’re still available? I haven’t read much about the coronavirus, could it be transferred via objects? I suppose not or they would be closing down on the Imports.

Virus can live on surfaces, and it varies by material. Just spray the boxes with disinfectant and leave in the garage for 2-4 weeks would be my best guess. Specifics - would have to do a web search.

Also UV-C light(can be harmful if not done properly) can kill most virus and bacteria. Also ozone. You can buy battery operated ozone cleaners slightly smaller than a Walkman and put them in a sealed container and most virus and bacteria is killed that way too. Don’t breathe the ozone either-harmful it is-that’s why you put it in a sealed container.

I’ve had a pandemic flu kit since 2014 so I really don’t need that stuff. I reordered stuff to restock what I used in the pantry, and ordered some new cold and flu meds. I got some extra bleach and the Clorox hydrogen peroxide health care cleaner and wipes.

I have enough of that Calcium whatever to make 100s of gallons of bleach. Might could use some more disposable coveralls. Ordered a bunch of duct tape. Usually have 5 or six rolls and was down to 2.

Tried some new stuff-really like the Sambucus gummies. I pretty much self-isolate during the winter anyway. This year the insurance required me to go see the Doctor for recertifying my cpap and oxygen.

4 days later, stomach issues and stuffy nose-very mild. Ugh.

Mostly, with this new stuff-we’ll know within 2-3 weeks how bad it’ll be here. Best way to avoid it is to just stay home for a couple of months, get plenty of sleep, and nutrition/vitamins. And don’t forget to wash those hands really good-like the Vids show how to do correctly.

Don’t touch the mail-use tongs and throw them all in the uv or ozone sterilizer-if things get really bad. Course we might not even have mail if it’s bad enough.

I keep watching Singapore. Ninety some odd case more than 50 recovered and no deaths. It shows that good medical practice can work.
