Trump, citing ‘evil massacre’ in Florida, starts talking about gun control
Washington Post ^ | February 20, 2018 | Jenna Johnson, Mark Berman, Josh Dawsey

President Trump on Tuesday signaled an openness to modest gun-control measures following what he called an “evil massacre” at a South Florida high school last week that left 17 dead and prompted passionate calls from teenagers for reform.

Trump directed the Justice Department to draft a ban on devices known as “bump stocks,” molded pieces of plastic or metal that can attach to a legal semiautomatic gun and allow it to fire up to 100 rounds in seven seconds, similar to an illegal machine gun.

In private, he has indicated that he might do more, telling advisers and friends in recent days that he is determined to push for some sort of gun-control legislation, according to people familiar with the conversations.

In one such discussion, during dinner with television commentator Geraldo Rivera at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, the president listened with interest as Rivera suggested raising the minimum age at which a person could buy a semiautomatic weapon from 18 to 21. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Tuesday that the idea is “on the table for us to discuss.”

So far, Trump’s public stances have not crossed the agenda of the powerful pro-gun-rights National Rifle Association, which endorsed him during the 2016 Republican primary and spent more than $30 million supporting his candidacy and attacking his opponent in the general election, Hillary Clinton. But behind the scenes, Trump is floating ideas that could put him at odds with the NRA.

The NRA did not respond Tuesday to a request for comment.

Trump’s attempt at a new tone on the gun issue comes as the politics surrounding the issue appear to be changing in the wake of the shooting last week in Parkland, Fla.

If he plays this like he did DACA he’ll do great!....

DACA isn't resolved yet and neither is the 2nd.

I agree. If you need to be 21to have a gun, then you need to be 21 to vote. If you have to pass a background check to buy a gun, same check for voting.

I personally do not care about bump stocks, I am concerned with an “assault” weapon ban.

But to be perfectly honest, a bump stock ban is also useless.

All bans are useless. You can’t “ban” anything.

I don’t even actually know that a bump stock was used in Nevada. I know the media says that they were, but the media has no credibility.

I would be much more in favor of measures that would actually work, such as fortified security and armed men.

I’m not interested in bans. Useless. Criminals do not follow laws. Murder is banned.

And as far as Trump goes. If he has my back, I have his. If he doesn’t have my back, I don’t have his.

It’s very simple.

.......”There are people posting in this thread that don’t have a clue about what they are saying or what has been proposed”......

There are also those who are willing to hear the arguments for and against reasonable regulations regarding firearms when we all recognize the students today are quite another picture of behavior and responsibility than when we were growing up with parents who knew how to parent and teach good behavior and responsibility.

We have a problem with parents today....and with systems that are broken and fractured intended to protect the public but are favoring criminal behavior gone unchecked. LAws are not enforced...and all such we’ve discussed here.

So given that it is the equation....I will continue to look at this in light of the irresponsibility of this society who thinks it’s ok for a kid to have a semi automatic weapon that can ‘easily’ find it’s way into the wrong hands.

" Everyone here criticizing Trump has obviously not paid attention to how he negotiates and defeats every opponent. Have some faith."

I do have faith and this could be President Trump giving Sessions the chance to say all these "Devises" do not turn a firearm into a machine gun and are thus legal by the letter of the law.

Or Sessions could come up with some mumbo jumbo that would put the whole intent of the 2nd amendment in jeopardy. I have faith in President Trump, Jeff Session, not an ounce. The last thing we need is deer in the headlights Sessions trying to define things that shoot fast and regulate them.

Even if this is just the President doing what he does I'm not sure he realizes how dangerous this is to his administration. Jeff Sessions is a complete dolt and a dangerous one at that.

I hope you are right and I'm not back here next week saying "told ya".

Can’t have gun control without a secure border.

With all due respect sir, we had that argument in 1776 and your side of it lost. Read up on it.

Look..if getting people to obtain a voter ID in trade for kids having to be 21 to own a semi automatic weapon...I’ll do that trade in a heart beat. We’re talking increasing the age..that’s it...Sheesh!

...Advance the liberal agenda, Mr. Trump, and I will be more than happy to sit out 2018 and let them deal with you...

I think you are wrong here.

DJT is far, far better for our cause than anyone on the horizon. What do you think Hillary would be doing right now? You really want a liberal in office?

I would easily give up bump stocks for national concealed carry reciprocity. How about you?

I would rather get one or two more Supremes from DJT and then attack useless laws in that venue. Or do you want a Merrick Garland type instead of more Neil Gorsuch types?

I’m curious if Trump has people that monitor the reaction among his base across various forums. He should.

In 1776 we didn’t have semi-automatic weapons in the hands of kids going into schools shooting other kids.

Not like the FBI is not using funding against crime to fund political campaigns...

Gun control is a big loser and nono for Trump but people drink the Kool Aid

Not sure. He does not seem to see the FBi never uses such legislation to fight crime but to campaign for the Swamp

The swamp is above all a lawyering system of hyocrisy

So you’re saying kids under 21 have to have guns like police do to defend themselves? In other words let all kids have guns and it’ll be good?

"In 1776 we didn’t have semi-automatic weapons in the hands of kids going into schools shooting other kids."

We also didn't have cable news, radio and the internet but somehow this is still protected by "freedom of the press" and "freedom on speech"

Good grief you are hopeless.
