Trump, citing ‘evil massacre’ in Florida, starts talking about gun control
Washington Post ^ | February 20, 2018 | Jenna Johnson, Mark Berman, Josh Dawsey

President Trump on Tuesday signaled an openness to modest gun-control measures following what he called an “evil massacre” at a South Florida high school last week that left 17 dead and prompted passionate calls from teenagers for reform.

Trump directed the Justice Department to draft a ban on devices known as “bump stocks,” molded pieces of plastic or metal that can attach to a legal semiautomatic gun and allow it to fire up to 100 rounds in seven seconds, similar to an illegal machine gun.

In private, he has indicated that he might do more, telling advisers and friends in recent days that he is determined to push for some sort of gun-control legislation, according to people familiar with the conversations.

In one such discussion, during dinner with television commentator Geraldo Rivera at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, the president listened with interest as Rivera suggested raising the minimum age at which a person could buy a semiautomatic weapon from 18 to 21. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Tuesday that the idea is “on the table for us to discuss.”

So far, Trump’s public stances have not crossed the agenda of the powerful pro-gun-rights National Rifle Association, which endorsed him during the 2016 Republican primary and spent more than $30 million supporting his candidacy and attacking his opponent in the general election, Hillary Clinton. But behind the scenes, Trump is floating ideas that could put him at odds with the NRA.

The NRA did not respond Tuesday to a request for comment.

Trump’s attempt at a new tone on the gun issue comes as the politics surrounding the issue appear to be changing in the wake of the shooting last week in Parkland, Fla.

The biggest trouble with banning bump-stocks, is that they aren’t simply definable - and the language in proposals put forth so far go waaaaay beyond actual bump-stocks.

” I don’t care about the bump stocks at all.”

A lot of people don’t really care about guns and won’t mind if yours are banned.

” What do you think of raising the age from 18 to 21, though?”

If you’re going to do that, then raise the voting age too.

And the age at which you can undergo medical therapy/procedures if you believe you are transgender.

And the age at which you can have an abortion without parental permission.

And the age at which you can enter contracts and have other adult rights/permissions, like getting married.

"Further tell me why a student under 21 yrs. old needs a “fast firing” gun?"

Nope, I don't think you understand how this whole freedom thing works. You tell me why they don't need one and why your opinion or anyone elses over rules that students god given rights to own a fast firing gun if he so pleases.

Perhaps, I don’t know the specifics of his encounters with Law enforcement.

But the sheer number indicates serious mental instability. Perhaps in cases like this the Police could put a temporary restriction on purchases. At least until they are evaluated by a trained professional.

I’m all for the 2nd, but it is in our interests to do everything we can to keep nuts like this from owning guns.

To do nothing is to ignore reality and to put our more of our rights at greater risk.

The only solution at this point is to have armed personnel on site who can RETURN FIRE. These punks know they are killing fish in a barrel. That needs to change.

Liberal policies have unleashed this crap on us all. 2nd Amendment policies need to prevail.

And yet they also want the voting age lowered.

It’s insulting how stupid they believe we are.

as what does a student need one for? ....He doesn’t.

First, other people deciding what basic item another person needs is something which should give you pause.

Second, as an AR is simply a light basic rifle, it is useful both in learning how to use one at an appropriate age - and not so old that they are viewed as some sort of juju magic - and as needed for a variety of beneficial events.

If there is any doubt as to how much power the media still has, take a look at what they are doing with the propaganda.

It’s been non-stop for a week. Coordinated brainwashing.

Now people, even here at FreeRepublic are parroting anti-gun talking points about “need” for a weapon and raising the age for purchasing weapons.

The AR15 did nothing. It can’t. It’s powerless. An inanimate object. It take a person to make it fire. In the hands of a good person it’s a force for good, in the hands of a bad person it can be bad. It’s the person that causes the tool to operate. People have been killing people since Cain killed Abel with a rock.

We need human control, not gun control.

Stop buying the media propaganda!!!!

Why are nuts roaming the street instead of in an insane asylum like we used to put them in?

Oh right, because libtard do-gooders said insane asylums were bad and we need to release nutcases into the general public under the care of fake quack psychiatrists who promise they will give them magic pills to make them behave.

“No reason for a kid to have such a weapon if he’s a student at home or in school.”

So you’re not a “Shall not be infringed” kind of person?

Oh that’s just baloney......First of all military service at 18 is ‘voluntary’ not required. And the military knows they are not ‘adults’...All the men in my family were and some still are military...as they have been hunters as well.. So I’m well familiar with the topic.

It is very relevant ‘why’ a teenager under 21 needs to ‘target practice’ with a semi-automatic weapon in order to learn firearms..... Which isn’t about denying the second Amendment so you can get off that excuse now.

What do they stand to gain from target practicing with a semi-automatic that they can’t wait til they’re 21 to learn.??? You still haven’t answered....

Further tell me why a student under 21 yrs. old needs a “fast firing” gun?

1) The same reasons the police need them. 2) There are weekly examples of teenagers using these light rifles to defend themselves and others. 3) an AR-15 isn't a "fast-firing" gun. It's a "normal-firing" light rifle. 4) are you advocating them having heavier firearms?

In the hands of a good person it’s a force for good, in the hands of a bad person it can be bad.

And there clearly were not enough good people with guns present.

I’m not buying it..I’m thinking things through about the facts of what they are in the school system, on the street and in our homes today.

These kids are not taught responsible behavior anymore.....and when society gets out of ‘self-control’ in the homes then something has to be done to regulate it tighter until parents get control of their homes.

When I was growing up students use to carry to school, in their back window of their trucks, gun racks and guns and nobody was going around shooting up schools. Becuase they were taught ‘behavior’ and common sense. Todyas youth are nopt being taught such.

Everyone here criticizing Trump has obviously not paid attention to how he negotiates and defeats every opponent. Have some faith.

I want to point out again and again and again if needed.

The president said "ALL DEVICES" not just bump stocks. Can I make it more clear. "ALL DEVICES" , "ALL DEVICES" , "ALL DEVICES".

That definition can be nearly anything used to FIRE a semi automatic firearm. A regulation like this could and would almost certainly be turned into a complete ban on ALL semi automatic firearms.

There are people posting in this thread that don't have a clue about what they are saying or what has been proposed.

You make a great point.

Mental Health care needs serious reform and people who are a danger to others should be committed.

My point is that we don’t want crazy people to be part of the
militia, that is reserved for all Law Abiding Citizen’s.
