The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Will be taking most plants out to green house next week. Hubby will start seeds pretty soon. I need to transplant aloe plant and figure out where to plant the potted turmeric plants.
The wheat is now 3" tall. Garlic has grown a little. Looking forward to spring/summer gardening. Hope you are all doing well. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
Pinging List.
Hi greeneyes! We are expecting snow this weekend, but today it was in the 50’s. Weird.
Going to experiment to keep the voles at bay. Maybe we don't even have any but our not to far away neighbor did.
That is weird. Of course we in Missouri are used to weird.
There’s an old saying in Missouri - Don’t like the weather, just wait around a little bit - it will change. LOL
Yep, here.
That’s a good idea. We never had any before, but last year there were - got almost the entire bed of potatoes - it was one of the smaller beds.
Howdy. How’s your weather?
Don’t voles travel in underground tunnels? How does the netting prevent them from tunneling under the netting?
Weather here is cloudy, a bit rainy here and there. OTT, a perfect PNW winter. Oh, and all the plants are still sleeping with the exception of the unruly currant bush that’s starting to bud.
I also found four large wire waste baskets at dollar store and will do a couple of my exotic tomato plants in them. Stick them down in the ground and add soil/plants.
It's the birds/deer/rabbits that the netting will keep out.
This will be the first year for a community garden at our apartment project. There are a lot of us seniors so there should be a wealth of experience available.
putting the finishing touches on my upfitted Rain Gutter Grow hydroponic System from last year and plan to go full-bore with it this year. Google RGGS systems for more information...
Have a 4-10'x4"pipes in a 10'x10' structure, with each pipe having a single feed from their own rain-barrel system. Also have 3 - 8'x4' raised beds going, with an eye to increase them as well.
all in all, it's looking to be a great year!!!
We got some rain here too. Should have some clear weather next week though.
Thanks will DuckDuckGo that later. I quit google.
I wish I had pictures of my friends Castor Bean plants. They looked like bamboo some 10 feet in height and beautiful brown red leaves. The leaves looked more like maple leaves, no curled edges as in many internet pictures of the plant. I have some of it’s seeds and will plant them in my big tree planter by the porch. I will have another go at planting some Pumpkin on a stick seeds. The ones I planted last year did not come up. I was told I should plant them with just a dusting of dirt on top. A friend has promised me some seeds from the ancient strain of Indian tobacco that he grows. JrFreeper is smiling right now.
I sometimes think it would be good to grow a little tobacco in case times get tough - use it for barter - neither hubby nor I smoke and neither do our kids.
Please add me to the ping list
We nearly made a critical mistake, using left over starter soil from last year. It contained mold that wasn't destroyed when we baked the soil in cooking bags.
A light blend of hydrogen peroxide knocked down the mold, but we're still watching for a recurrence.
Our Alissum seeds have sprouted in two days ...
You are ahead of us. We are waiting a little bit. Have to reorganize the green house - construction and painting going on.
Will do. Should show up next Friday.
