Probably the most famous of all the Pillsbury Bake Off recipes is the ‘Tunnel of Fudge Cake', which was one of the winners in the 1966 contest. This cake also led to a boom in sales for the Nordic Ware Bundt pan, which then became the most popular and most-sold baking pan in the US.

(Ella Helfrich’s cake was actually the second prize winner that year; the grand prize appears to have gone to Mari Petrelli’s Golden Gate Snack Bread, a savory cheese bread.)

The original recipe for Tunnel of Fudge used a packaged Double Dutch frosting mix which Pillsbury later discontinued, but here is the new recipe, using a cocoa powder glaze (a cake like this will only be as good as the cocoa used, so I'd be interested in hearing your brand suggestions for that ingredient):

Do they sell them as bundt holes?

Are there really 15 kinds of beans - or is that like ‘many bean’ soup?

This: E Guittard Cocoa Powder, Unsweetened Rouge Red Dutch Process Cocoa or this: HERSHEY'S SPECIAL DARK 100% Cocoa (Natural and Dutched Cocoas, haven't tried the latter yet (have an unopened new can) but it really looks good.

Rather than the cheese bread from scratch, I would rather make these again, made them only once years ago. Had them at a bunch at my cousin's.

They are delicious, think I used 2 jars Old English cheese spread and whole egg. Bread has to be unsliced and crusts removed. A Pullman loaf would be ideal. Don't think I'm trying to one-upman you, just didn't like the onion soup mix in your recipe and remembered these. Sometimes things don't sound so good and then if you try them, sensational though.

I buy this package of dried 15 bean soup mix; get it in the soup section at Walmart. I usually buy five bags at a time, easily stored and a long shelf life. The bags are about three inches in diam. and about a foot long give or take. It has everything from lima’s, lentils, split pea, corn, pinto, etc.

I would use Ghirardelli Dutch processed cocoa powder.

Mmmm. Learned a chocolate frosting tip from a local restaurant that makes the yummiest chocolate cake. Make the usual choc buttercream frosting and then microwave until it melts. Pour over cake. Turns into fudgie heaven!

I have found that the powdered cocoa by Ghirardelli, as well as any of their chocolate chips are superb for baking.

Now, I’m sure someone will be here in 3...2...1...to tell me they drown kittens for fun, LOL!

Just for kicks, I added cocoa powder and used hot coffee instead of water for my tortilla mix. The dough has a dark color and has a hint of coffee. Tasty with a cinnamon sugar topping.

1 1/4 cup of flour (1 cup regular flour & 1/4-cup whole wheat)
1 1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp kosher salt
4 T cooking oil (or 5T of lard or bacon renderings)
1/2 cup HOT WATER **(substitute coffee here and add the cocoa as a dry ingredient before the water)

Use a pastry cutter on the flour, baking powder, salt, and oil to get a small crumb. Then add the HOT water. (I have used 150 -190F water and mixed with a spoon.) When the dough comes together and is cool enough to handle, I worked it until the sides of the bowl was clean. Wrap the dough in plastic and cool it in the fridge for 30 minutes or over-night. Ping pong sized dough ball will roll out to 6-inch tortillas that are just great for street tacos. Cook on a dry black iron skillet (450-500 F surface temperature.)

The next iteration will include testing cayenne, onion powder and/or garlic powder.

Cut the ingredients cited above and have a nice lunch for two and not feel bad if the mix does not work as expected. /humor

Chow and Ciao!

I’m going to make your challah bread tomorrow, using six braids. A friend invited us to dinner Saturday night and asked me to bring bread. I can’t wait to try it! I’ll make it early in the day in case I have to make back up bread.

I’m going to have to study up on this. Here’s the King Arthur guide to cocoa:

Fat Tuesday is on the way and none of the bakeries in my area sell King Cakes. Does anyone have a recipe they’d like to share?

Sweet tortillas? Cool idea! Those would be good with peanut butter wrapped in them. Or Nutella!
