Wireless Message Traffic From the Titanic Disaster in real time (more or less)
YouTube ^ | 03-17-2017 | CanadaDan

The message traffic from the night the Titanic sank presented in more or less real time (removed long silences and messages repeated many times). I am not sure why, but reading each message as the situation becomes more and more desperate left me somewhat disturbed. Even knowing what happened and that it was over 100 years ago, the sudden silence at the end was... appalling.

As a ham myself - ka7nnx, (not a very good ham though), I found this interesting. Had to learn morse code to get a novice license back in the dark ages of the 1980s.

And as my grandmother was immigrating to America, she tried to board the Carpathia in 1912. No 2nd class available then, so she tried again next year. But if she had made that passage, that ship and voyage rescued the Titanic survivors.

I’m surprised there isn’t a HAM group in FR. I’m AF7RU. I run a bunch of BSA units, and we do classes that get kids past their Tech license. If they pass, they get a free radio. We can program them so they are on the same band plan.

They take them to summer camp and use them like you would cell phones, kibitzing back and forth over simplex.

Very fun to watch.

73s, AF7RU.

Glad you’re active with kids, teaching them. It seemed like a lost art. But with prepper interest, ham radio is important for disasters and off-the-grid.

I have been fascinated by the recent disclosure of there being an ongoing file in the coal bin that weakened the hull.

“an ongoing file”

They had a file on Trump that early?

fire not file.

I read that also and was surprised how big a problem coal fires were.

There is an underground coal fire in Centralia, PA that has been burning for decades

The town is closed off and you have to drive around it.

One of my old bosses back in TV was a big time HAM radio guy.

It sounded interesting but too pricey for me then and maybe now.

Still, I love history.

Interesting situation regarding the frequency collisions that, at the moment when communications needed the most, nothing could be received because everybody was speaking at once.

Kind of like the highway gets jammed with cars, and makes less headway possible, than if there were at least short spaces between the cars.

What could morse code operators do about this? Broadcasting - “stop talking” itself contributes to the jammed situation.

The best story I’ve heard recently is that the Titanic was switched with the Olympic (a sister ship which had been badly damaged in a collision with a British warship) and deliberately sunk in an insurance scam. The California was supposed to be positioned to quickly pick up the passengers before the Titanic went down, but that last bit didn’t work out too well.

Nothing new about it. The serious Titanic research people dismiss it as bunk.

It wasn't a raging fire, it was the sort of smouldering one that was common in the bunkers of coal burning ships.

This has been thoroughly discredited, along with the 'coal fire' theory. Been studying Titanic since the early Seventies and spend time on line now with folks who were involved in her discovery and have been down to the wreck and nothing will make them say 'not this s**t again' faster than this. :-)
