The Nunes memo is a dud
Vox ^ | February 2, 2018 | Zack Beauchamp

Rep. Devin Nunes’s infamous memo — the document numerous House Republicans claimed would demonstrate fundamental anti-Trump corruption at the FBI — was released early Friday afternoon. The entire thing is three and a half pages and only takes a few minutes to read closely and carefully.

After doing that, there is only one conclusion a fair reader could draw: There is absolutely nothing here.

There is no proof in the memo that the FBI is biased against Trump, no proof of abuse of surveillance powers by the FBI, and no proof that the investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia are fundamentally flawed. The memo is a piece of partisan spin, and not a particularly compelling one at that.

Republicans who claimed it was anything else have been egregiously misrepresenting what the memo actually says.

The memo does not support its core claim The memo begins by making a grandiose claim: The FBI’s use of surveillance power under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) during the 2016 campaign was “a troubling breakdown of legal processes established to protect the American people from abuses related to the FISA process.”

The only example the memo cites is an October 21, 2016, request by the Department of Justice and FBI for permission under FISA powers to snoop on former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page. The key word there is former: Page had left the Trump campaign at least a month before the application. That’s the first red flag that there’s nothing here, as an FBI campaign to undermine Trump’s campaign would almost certainly involve targeting someone who was actually working on it.

That it's a nothing burger.

Then why were they so worked up over it for weeks?

This is what the left is going to argue over the next few days. That it's a nothing burger.

And the entire nation will listen to this and say - "Yup there is nothing there it is a far right wing conspiracy."Both Flaky Flake and McStain are ashamed that Paul Rino and Pres Trump released it. With Rinos like that in the Senate we don't have a prayer.

With help from the media and spineless Republicans, it will be a dud. It will be forgotten by next week.

You know that they're going to argue that, along with why it was released over the opposition of the DOJ and FBI. But while I think that it's hardly a nothing burger I guess I had also expected more of a smoking gun. I have a problem seeing where firing Rosenberg or Mueller is justified based on this alone.

All kinds of lies by omission here - the same method used in presenting the dossier to the FISA court. It’s how the left rolls.

I dunno. I think, “Makes Watergate look like a schoolboy prank” describes it better. Looking at it with considerably better than 6th grade reading comprehension skills, I see evidence that senior FBI officials perjured themselves before a Federal court, used known-false evidence to get warrants, excluded exculpatory evidence, and authorized illegal wiretaps for the purpose of tipping the election towards the Democratic Party. Looks to me like they did everything in the playbook except witness tampering to suborn perjury, and I expect that will come to light if there are hearings.

I’m still waiting to hear what collusion charges are brought on Papadopoulos. They got him in a perjury trap, probably on stuff they got from FISA approved surveillance based on, what, a trip to Russia that he took years ago?

How’s that amount to and kind of nefarious activity and how does using a fraudulent pee-pee dossier to advance the investigation into Page? If anything, it proves that it was a politically motivated hit from the jump.

If there is nothing there, why did the intelligence community so vehemently warn against its release, hmmm?

The FBI misled the FISA Court by misrepresenting Clinton campaign materials as USA counter-intelligence, basically faking evidence to obtain a warrant.

Did Zach at Vox address this?

While I’d love to see all those responsible for this crap held accountable, what resignations are you speaking of? McCabe is on terminal leave.

Basically, burning vacation time until he hits his retirement date in March. Anyone else?

This whole thing is despicable, in so many ways, but if anyone thinks that anyone is going to be held accountable or go to prison over any of this, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I’d like to sell you.

I think they attempted to do some witness tampering - it’s not in the memo, but from what I’ve read, one of the supporting documents indicates that there was some attempt to interfere with a witness (I’m not sure in what case though).

The memo is a summary. Once the supporting documents are fully available in a comprehensive form, I think the attorneys will be flocking.

It’s huge and scary and definitely not the end, but the beginning of some very tumultuous months in the country.

President Trump telegraphs his punches. It’s too late for the left to rethink their mindset that he’s too dumb to worry about.

He’s after them, and they are terrified because what is coming out is nothing short of treason.
