Scientists have found a way to convert human waste into a Vegemite-like food for astronauts

ASTRONAUTS on missions to Mars and beyond could soon survive off a Vegemite-like substance made from human waste.
Scientists have just developed the method which uses microbes to break down solid and liquid waste.
Whats left behind is a microbial goo thats high in protein and fat essential qualities for food sources needed for long space voyages.
...
Imagine if someone were to finetune our system so that you could get 85 per cent of the carbon and nitrogen back from waste into protein without having to use hydroponics or artificial light, Professor House said.
That would be a fantastic development for deep-space travel. Its faster than growing tomatoes or potatoes.

If they would use the propulsion technology discarded for lack of political will in the early 60s, they could get to Mars in 3 days and would not only not have to eat re-processed crap but dined on real food (not the dehydrated sort).

The concept here is to take human waste and feed it to bacteria which grow on it. You then eat the bacterial biomass which is high in proteins and lipids. This cycle supposedly provides a long term supply of food for the astronauts. IMO this is not sustainable. You cannot repeatedly remove nutrients from food without reducing its mass and nutritional value. The use of microbes to convert it to a different form doesnt change this. This is the equivalent of biological perpetual motion machine.
