Computer help needed for Windows 10 - Where's Office?
Dec. 27, 2017 | vanity

Unfortunately, I've had to get a new computer and it's an Acer Windows 10. Does it not have Windows Office? From searches, apparently Windows 10 doesn't come with everything previous systems (95, XP, Windows 7) did. All I can find is a 30 day trial and then purchase window which asks for a 25 number key number which I can't find anywhere in the 5 small pieces of paperwork that came in the box. And the key number looks to be for a 30 day trial. Do I have to buy Office? What else will I have to buy? Any other surprises? Thanks.

I do NOT like 10. I do NOT like 10. I do NOT like 10. I do NOT like 10. I do NOT like 10. I do NOT like 10.

I just want something easy to type out and print a grocery list or something.

I also can't find a "search" on the start menu. Humph, no start menu. Can't find anything anymore. Guessing we aren't allowed to search for what's on our own bought and paid for computers anymore.

Yep, 30 day trial and buy. Alternately go on line, buy an older version. I am running Office 2010, runs OK, but Windows 10 doesn’t like Office 2000.

It all depends on the package offered. Most of the time, you have to purchase MS Office separately, or get a very stripped down version of it.

Historically Windows itself has never come with a full blown copy of office. Perhaps some computer makers included it with the bundled software but you most certainly would have paid extra for it when you bought the computer. More commonly the computers would come bundled with a program called MS Works, which was a very, very, scaled down version of Office.

Try Open Office. You make like it and it is free. I do most of my work with it.

Windows 10 should have Notepad.exe and WordPad.exe.

Or if you want a word processor you can download https://www.openoffice.org/ instead.

It’s free and you won’t know the difference.

Windows 10 is going to try and herd you into Office 365, a cloud-based SaaS (Software as a Service), which is the equivalent of signing a 30-year lease on the car rather than buying it.

For stuff like a grocery list, use Notepad under Windows Accessories.

Open Office is free and it’s excellent.

My only complaint with it is that it doesn’t save to the .docx format.

Otherwise, you’re buying MS Office.

As for the search function....right click on the window icon in the lower left corner “search” is one of the options presented.

Yes, I use them occasionally, but even then, a lot of it is free trial stuff or hobbled versions that you can’t fully use unless you buy the full version............and some is just crap.........
