Bono has said that music has gotten very girly in recent years, with hip-hop serving as the only place for young male anger at the moment.
The U2 frontman voiced the opinion during a new interview, with the 57-year-old lamenting the lack of young male anger in rock music in 2017.
Koko Joe--Don & Dewey (1958)
No you fecking ijit. Fun, pleasure and good times are at the heart of rock ‘n’ roll. We Americans invented it. We know what it is Bozo.
You notice as musicians get older or is it sober they can’t make a damn song that anyone is willing to listen to. Take Paul Mccartney, Ted Nugent or the cough cough Boss for example.
Rock & Roll is based on rebellion, it’s a middle finger to the status quo. Unfortunately after the initial wave of 60s & 70s rock, late 70s punk, early 90s grunge/punk, nobody is shocked anymore. Kids aren’t going to be drawn to the same music their parents are listening to and rock is on life support at the moment.
"Nazareth" - that's not very girly at all. Neither is the "Clash", or "The Who".
"The Whom", on the other hand....
Rock and roll was mostly dead by the mid-60s. Replaced by rock.
I agree that shock value is probably played-out (we hope.)
Having lived long enough to see the full spectrum of Rock and Roll from the 1950s to now, Bono's statement makes no sense.
For example, when I think of Mama Cass, I don't think of rage at all. I think of lovely harmonies and vocals and ham sandwiches.
On the other hand, if what Bono says is true, then this guy is a rock star:
My 14 yo niece listens to the most grating, Glee-sounding show tune crap, I don’t know if I’m shocked or not but I hate it. All of them are covers and bad renditions at that, so it’s even worse than just classic show tunes, which would be bad enough in and of themselves. The male singers all sound emasculated and the women all try to affect a sort of Ethel Merman thing, but end up sounding more like they’ve gargled with raw eggs.
People love to disparage Disco, but there were Disco artists with serious talent.
Donna Summer was an underrated, very talented vocalist. Her cover of Dan Fogelbergs Nether Lands is beautiful.
Nile Rodgers is another example. He is still a sought after guitarist and producer. His contribution to Daft Punks Get Lucky is, IMO, what makes that song great. He is a legend.
I guess the reason that I dont hate Disco, like most people do, is that I was born in December, 1970 and Disco was one of the first genres of music that I was exposed to.
Definitely agree with Bozo. Country (hick-pop) is all about guys crying because their girls left them. Auto-tune, ripped jeans, and spikey hair make the cross-overs indistinguishable.
I love disco, and I’m not ashamed to say it. I love the Bee Gees disco music. 70s R&B. Great music. Feels good. Well made - well played.
Why death metal never gets played on the radio.
Z-Rock rest in peace.
It’s been down hill ever since Led Zeppelin.
Actually, in the early days, rock and roll was about WINNING, not about angst.
Donna Summer was an underrated, very talented vocalist.
I tried. I really, really tried.
But, I could not stand to listen to even one minute of U2’s songs.
My cats and dog make better musical sounds.
The only musical Bono I know is Sonny.
Yep, Bono is a Bone head.
Chuck Berry is rock and roll. He always wins. He took some licks from the blues, but the spirit is entirely different. It’s joyous and light.
