Rock & Roll is based on rebellion, it’s a middle finger to the status quo. Unfortunately after the initial wave of 60s & 70s rock, late 70s punk, early 90s grunge/punk, nobody is shocked anymore. Kids aren’t going to be drawn to the same music their parents are listening to and rock is on life support at the moment.
Rock and roll was mostly dead by the mid-60s. Replaced by rock.
I agree that shock value is probably played-out (we hope.)
My 14 yo niece listens to the most grating, Glee-sounding show tune crap, I don’t know if I’m shocked or not but I hate it. All of them are covers and bad renditions at that, so it’s even worse than just classic show tunes, which would be bad enough in and of themselves. The male singers all sound emasculated and the women all try to affect a sort of Ethel Merman thing, but end up sounding more like they’ve gargled with raw eggs.
