Groundbreaking surgery to regrow part of a human bone was carried out on Tuesday at HaEmek Hospital in the northern Israeli town of Afula.
Danny, a resident of a nearby kibbutz who had part of his shinbone removed eight months ago after a car accident, was treated in the procedure, which was hailed by medical staff as science fiction.
During the surgery, the first of its kind in the world, doctors took fat cells from the patient, grew them in a lab and injected them back into his body for them to generate the missing parts of the bone, the Yedioth Ahronoth daily reported Wednesday.
The procedure was developed several years ago by Israeli biotechnology company Bonus BioGroup. Fat cells are separated from the cells capable of generating tissue and blood vessels, and the latter are grown in a bioreactor, a device that simulates the environment inside the human body and provides optimal condition for bone generation. After two weeks, the process yields tissue that can be transplanted in the patients body and regrows the missing parts of the bone.

Star War s, with its emphasis on robotic prosthetics, just became steampunk.
No bones for Muslim.
I thought viagra already accomplished this?
Universities who have become politically active to support the Palestinians have cut off all exchanges with Israeli universities and science facilities. Arabs have given comparatively nothing to the world for fourteen hundred years except terror. Israel leads the world in several types of research. Israel has more PHD’s per capita than any other country.
Our universities are political pawns.
The article says that the bone could not do it by itself, so I'm wondering if it was a relatively large space that needed to be filled in.
The article states that 10 cm of bone is regenerated. That is approximately 4 inches.
That IS a breakthrough.
As it was, some of the ladies started talking about it and one Hispanic one was really proud of a woman's power - so my wife asked how she thought Lorena managed to whack it off w/o him stopping her. She said she just did a quick grab and 'whoosh' sliced it off.....my wife looked at her and delivered the perfect punch line, "Through the bone and everything?"
She's a good wife....
I’m not fat, I’m just storing repair parts for my body.
Id love to see Israeli scientists discover a cure for cancer and refuse to share it with 128 countries.
Fascinating article I would never have found. Thank you.
Ping.
Step in the right direction, even if it is a small step. I hope to see bones, muscles, nerves, and the rest all regrowing. We owe it to our military, especially if we keep importing people who put those in uniform in danger.
Its a little difficult to tell for sure because of the early 20th century language, but Mari Sandoz in her book “Crazy Horse” seems to describe the Bobbit procedure as being the technique used by the Plains Indian women to end undesired amorous attention.
Al Frankton should be grateful.
And thanks to moral relativism, the West welcomes and pays to upkeep these barbarians.
Hmmm, I know a lot of Congressional Republicans that this might be useful for.
