The nations homeless population increased this year for the first time since 2010, driven by a surge in the number of people living on the streets in Los Angeles and other West Coast cities.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released its annual Point in Time count Wednesday, a report that showed nearly 554,000 homeless people across the country during local tallies conducted in January. That figure is up nearly 1 percent from 2016.
Of that total, 193,000 people had no access to nightly shelter and instead were staying in vehicles, tents, the streets and other places considered uninhabitable. The unsheltered figure is up by more than 9 percent compared to two years ago.
Increases are higher in several West Coast cities, where the explosion in homelessness has prompted at least 10 city and county governments to declare states of emergency since 2015.
City officials, homeless advocates and those living on the streets point to a main culprit: the regions booming economy. Rents have soared beyond affordability for many lower-wage workers who until just a just few years ago could typically find a place to stay. Now, even a temporary setback can be enough to leave them out on the streets.

Rush Limbaugh bought a nice can opener for his mother so she could open her dog food cans.
You forgot to add minorities hit hardest to the list. Gotta be inclusive, doncha know.
Seen many Obama villages but nobody was covering them. Guess the President Donald J Trump is despicable isn’t working now we’ll blast 24/7 the plight of the homeless and he doesn’t care.
Right on cue.
New meme. Trump’s fault.
Democrats didn’t bother to count them
It is as though they have these stories pre-written, and ready to print as soon as a Republican president takes office.
During the 1995 budget debates, after Democrats claimed that Social Security payments would leave seniors with no choice but to eat dog food, Rush Limbaugh said in jest that he was going to get his mother a can opener. Schroeder denounced Limbaugh’s remark on the floor of the House.

All those obamavilles 8 years ago and the media never covered it. Suddenly it’s Reagan era homelessness all over again.
Bur Reagan is the ONLY president that did anyththing about it.
From Wiki:
“After many years of advocacy and numerous revisions, President Reagan signed into law the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act in 1987this remains the only piece of federal legislation that allocates funding to the direct service of homeless people. “
.
lol!! You’re killing it today :)
ABC has just the reporter to put on the story.
They are including all those democrat harassers who will be on the street.
There were no homeless under 0bama. They all simply lived in “undocumented dwellings.”
“We NEVER have homeless people when a democrat is president.”
They told us the Reagan economy sucked and interviewed homeless people up until they started Iran-Contra hearings.
West Coast sanctuary cities allowing more people in than can be housed and jobs leaving the states.
Begging is very profitable. Ask these fake beggars with a Vet sign for their VA ID. 10-1 says you will hear-Oh I left it in/on my dresser.
I remember a long time back here in Mass the local Boston channel sent their crews out to find the poor people living on the streets because of whatever Republican was now in office. They had it all set up with advertising and then when they went out on the streets, the folks they found were down right honest and blamed themselves for making poor choices and not the president for their homelessness. Suddenly what was hyped as a several weeks series of reports, vanished into thin air. Must have been magic. Wish I could remember what decade I saw and heard all this, then I would remember which GOP president they were blaming, could have been Reagan, Bush or W. ???
