'Indiana Joan', 95, is accused of looting $1MILLION in ancient artefacts from Egypt and the ME

...Ms Howard, otherwise known as 'Indiana Joan', volunteered on archeological digs for around 11 years with British and American archaeologists in Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and Israel from around 1967...

Her collection includes neolithic axe heads more than 40,000 years old, pottery and weapons from the Phoenicians and the Romans, coins and seals and jewellery from the time of the pharaohs, and a precious funerary mask from Egypt.

She said a favourite was a Roman dagger she found buried with the skeletal remains of its owner.

Another was the wrappings of a mummy's remains and a cat claw wound within it, indicating the deceased was buried with their pet.

While notably proud of her selection, she has come under fire from prominent archaeologist Monica Hanna who believes it is illegal for Ms Howard to have possession of the items.

Ms Hanna, who works closely with the Egyptian government, has called for all of the treasures to be returned to their rightful homelands.

I'm thinking this is more progressive snowflakes wanting to take back history from those who preserved it and return it to countries where it has a good chance of being eventually destroyed. I'd say give them back some good photographs or 3D images.

Everything she did was legal when she did it. The treaty was not signed until 1989, in Australia.

Would you strip museums, like Chicago's Oriental Institute, bare in order to return artifacts? I used to docent there.

Whatever.
That stuff was definitely safer with her than with the Egyptians.

I agree. Even after seeing what has happened to antiquities in the Arab world, they want to return things. The Elgin Marbles being one of their main gripes — should they have left them in Athens to deteriorate in a couple hundred years of city smog?

The law wasn’t in effect until after she pocketed the artifacts.

Doesn’t everyone have mummy wrappings laid out on their coffee table? It makes for a great conversation starter.

My BIL is from Honduras and he has an original Mayan artifact that he brought here before it became illegal to remove from the country.

It was found by his brother who ran the family sugar cane business. It was uncovered while one of the cane fields was being plowed prior to planting. Unfortunately several other artifacts contained in the small mound were destroyed.......

If Ms. Hanna had siddled up nicely to the 95 year-old and talked to her sweetly she probably would have gotten her to donate all or most of her stuff to a museum somewhere.

Ms Hanna would have insisted on an Egyptian museum rather than an American one, with the woman having no input.

Finders keepers, losers weepers.

Better Indiana Joan than ISIS. I'd tell that "prominent" archaeology lady to pound sand. Plenty of that in the Middle East.

Yep, the tragedy of living in a free country as totalitarianism creeps in. Australia: it used to be free.

'It is not acceptable that Mrs. Howard behaved as a pirate and appropriated from the different archaeological sites,' the letter reads.

Correct. It is only acceptable when governments or government sponsored groups behave as pirates and appropriate artifacts from the different archaeological sites. /s

True. But for new world order advocates (like those criticizing her on this thread) everything belongs to the state.

I am reminded of ISIS jackhammering the statues in the Iraqi museums. How would these survive there.
