How to survive an APOCALYPSE: Expert reveals the five key things city dwellers should do (tr)

From Hurricane Irma to the Northern California wildfires, this year has seen its fair share of natural disasters.

These disasters may have you thinking about what you should do in the eventuality one hits your city - how do you prepare and should you think about leaving?

According to an expert, a lot of what drives large-scale evacuations is mass hysteria and fear, and most natural disasters don't require an immediate evacuation because they can be predicted, for example hurricanes.

However, there are certain things city dwellers can do in preparation for a sudden disaster.

John Renne, the Director of the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions at Florida Atlantic University, told The Week that while people don't necessarily need to evacuate during disasters, they should be prepared for one.

Firstly, Renne recommends that people should plan on staying in their homes and cities as opposed to fleeing.

This is because there aren't many situations where you would need to evacuate an entire city.

And for some types of disasters, such as chemical attacks, it's safer to stay indoors rather than leave. Even during the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City, only a small part of the city required evacuation.

It's more common to require evacuating only impacted sections of cities rather than entire cities.

Didn’t pieces of jewelry allow some of the Russian aristocrats to escape the bolcheviks?

Maybe go instead with a lead and brass mix for barter? They’ll know you have more in your camp.

But what good will the silver and gold do if you’re camped on some island living off crabs and fish? If you can stick it in your pocket and keep going, it could come in handy, but it could just weigh you down. As you say, if you’re going to barter with it, you’d better be armed.

Except that 3 days is hardly diddly squat for prep. 10-30 days minimum would be significantly better.

Agree. You must be worth more alive, like Mailman. And you need to be part of a ‘tribe’ ahead of time (now), for safety in numbers. That’s a critical part of what militias provide.

"For some, it was a situation with no real terrific options."

I think that's what it comes down to. That's why it's a good idea to plan ahead as much as you can.

Planning for children has got to be the #1 priority. Not only are they going to be their parents' primary consideration, but they're going to be difficult to care for under adverse circumstances.

People with children, who didn't plan ahead, could become the most dangerous adversaries. It might be a good idea to stash away some appeasers if you can.

its the only currency that will work if at all.

Hardly.

Weapons, ammo, fresh water, coffee, all manner of dried and canned foodstuffs. For starters.

Your gold might get you into the "castle," whatever that might mean, but they will throw your body into the moat before they've counted it all.

"...nails, nuts, bolts, screws, etc."

Mentioned in three different categories - wife thinks I'm nuts for saving lots of these - but they take up relatively little room and they are not an expense (and you can't really make your own after the fact).

I’m totally screwed. I don’t have atomizers nor board games from your list. Might as well go outside and accept fate.

How did that strategy(staying) work in New Orleans when the hurricane wiped out the dikes?

Gold can take you to the bottom as you try to swim, or make you a target for those who know you have it.

Ammo will become currency.

You’ll need water. As far as food stocks, don’t bother running out to buy bulk. Buy a little extra something each week when shopping.

just a few little tips.

Weapons, ammo, fresh water, coffee, all manner of dried and canned foodstuffs>>>>>>>>>>>>

All of that will be stolen along with the god YOU said would be stolen? Why would it be stolen if people would not want it?

Weapons , ammo and gold. And a boat and a chainsaw.

That’s all I would need. Then I can fish, hunt, and forage for the rest , covering the distance to a rural area.

You of lesser survival skills, go ahead and haul all that shit around with you . Good luck. Mobility is your best friend.A sail boat or a horse is your next best friend.

101a. An extra house to store it in. Or...
b. A deuce-and-a-half to haul all this stuff around if yer going mobile!

Dayum whot a list! d;^)

Concerning the gold and bartering thing methinks I'll try to keep any contact with unknown humans to a minimum best I can. Don't fergit yer solar to keep some of those "force multipliers" running.
Country boys can survive... or just spend a few days around the house waiting out a hurricane/ice storm/whatever. Hehehe. d;^)

Shouldn’t that be higher on the list?

So,how many times have you survived this scenario?>>>>>>>>>>

Many times. For many years I had a job working in mining exploration in the far North. When the weather went bad, we were left alone, no resupply, no medicine, for weeks and at times longer than a month.

So I know of what I speak.

You don’t get to do that stuff unless you refuse to quit the job and always get it done. Nice money at that.

My country home is near thousands of horse & buggy Mennonite and Amish farms. We try to always be good neighbors. That’s the best survival option.

I grew up as a hillbilly with outhouse and no running water. If need be I can do it again.
