FULL TITLE: Catholic school is forced to cover up a brand new statue after 'unfortunate' design showing a kneeling boy and a saint
A Catholic boys school has been forced to cover up a brand new statue after a rather unfortunate design created a storm on social media.
Blackfriars Priory School in Adelaide last week unveiled a statue of St Dominic handing a young boy a loaf of bread.
However the design featuring a boy kneeling at the foot of the 12th century Spanish-born saint has caused embarrassment to the inner-city school, which teaches boys from kindergarten to year 12.

The kid is standing, not kneeling.
I never said all priests were perverts. The double meaning is quite clear in this statue. Why is it not a chunk of bread, or a slice? Or why not a Communion Wafer

This was obviously done liked this on purpose. Though back when I was a kid in catholic school in the 1950s this statue would have past muster (the boys would have snickered over it ) the general population of adults would have seen nothing wrong

Don’t blame us “perverts” for laughing please. After all - it was a Catholic school that erected this statue. And then covered it up.
And would this even be a issue at all if it were not for the thousands of cases where a pedo priest has offered a little boy some “bread”?
I do agree with you that the loaf could have been a better depiction although the communion wafer would have looked like a coin and possibly fired up a whole new wave of hysteria.
I prefer the statue wearing the burka.

Where ever there are children there is a possibility of having those who prey on children. Statistics grow along with the size of the sample group. Protection and prevention is paramount of course. But also very important is what is done once a predator is identified. It is a shame a church allowed those who were identified to continue access. This has also became the way our society has been siding with the privacy and ‘feelings’ rights of abusive perverts, etc. over the safety and wellbeing children everywhere (schools, adoption, social groups (boy scouts), etc.
I would be more offended by the ‘cover up’ making it look like someone in a burka, thus promoting Islam.

And I will blame the perverts in our perverted culture. Being a pervert (or not) is a choice. Choose wisely.
Quite aside from the terrible pose, it’s just not good art on any level. The material is ugly, the sculpting is amateurish and wooden, the child’s proportions are all wrong and the face of the saint looks deeply unhappy. I wouldn’t like it even if it weren’t for the other problem.
They should ship this to the Vatican. There are plenty of supporters of the current Pontiff who could identify with this image. Maybe place it outside one of the many Lavender Mafia watering holes?

Yup. Outstretched hand with the loaf being held sideways with the child reaching up towards it, that would be fine. But a loaf shaped like a male member coming right out of his crotch and with the kid reaching to give him a handjob gesture ? This couldn’t be more blatant and offensive short of having the boy having his mouth right on the end of the (ahem) “loaf.”
Sometimes a loaf of bread is just a loaf of bread.

That sculptor spent weeks on that project!!! He or she knew DAMN WELL what it was going to look like. It had to be a baguette style bread????
