The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings from Missouri. Fantastic Fall day. Cool Temp, sunshine, and tonight's low is only in the 50s. I finished digging the taters - not much production - voles got about half the planting before we vanquished them.

Hope to get some wheat planted tomorrow. Hubby hopes to complete the roof of the green house tomorrow. Then put on the door. Should be able to extend the growing season quite a bit. Still discussing how to use it year round.

Have been working a lot on housework to clear up the mess that piled up while sciatica was acting up. Hope all is well with everyone. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

How’s your back greeneyes?

Not much doing here.

Rained all week.

Onions and garlic looking good.

I need to go out and buy some potash or something to start feeding them.

Any ideas?

Sciatica is way better - just some residual discomfort, but low back is in more pain that I’ve had for many years. Still it’s so much better, and I only need my cane to handle the stairs.

Even managed to dig the taters - just did a little each day.

I always load up the garlic bed before planting with lots of compost, and rarely add anything else till I pull them up. I need to go put some straw on the beds, to get them ready for winter. Haven’t seen any sprouts yet.

I need to start thinking about next year. Too cold here at 8500 ft in the Colorado Rockies. Right now the thermometer is at 24F and snowing.

BRRR. I am so glad we don’t get that cold that soon. While we do sometimes have snow at Thanksgiving, it is often fairly nice weather, and sometimes downright spring like.

Yes, I am. I kinda fell off the wagon during the 3 months of Sciatica stuff. So I got religion now, need to knock off a few lbs, and make sure my triglycerides are ok for the blood test/cardiologist visit later this month.

As long as I stay at around 60 carbs, I don’t gain weight, and don’t get huge amount of ankle swelling. If I go over that, I gain weight and feet, ankles and lower leg swells.

I miss bread the most, but eating some apple, berries, tomatoes are more nutritious than bread. So I just don’t eat bread anymore, unless I make it myself-so it’s really satisfying and great tasting. Don’t miss sweets.

Hope your sciatica is better. That’s no fun. BTW, Happy Thanksgiving week to all.

Sounds like you’re getting there if you can dig taters and climb stairs. :)

I only planted about 100 red onions. I got the bulbs from Lowes and they must be really good because I think they all came up! Color me shocked!

I couldn’t bring myself to buy garlic starts though. I kept trying to find elephant garlic at the grocery store and couldn’t so settled for a head with pretty good sized cloves.

The store was asking $4 for two heads of regular garlic and same price for only two CLOVES of elephant garlic. No thanks!

Anyway, all I did was add some manure and topsoil after digging weeds and cat leavings out of the bed. Maybe when the weather dries up I’ll get some straw down to kerp the weeds out. I did add a bunch of plastic forks to keep out the kittehs. :) I think it’s working so far.

Excited to hear of the progress on your Greenhouse! Can you waive your Magic Wand and get Beau to finish the metal roof he started putting on our house in 2012? LOL!

He just shot a 600# Elk in Colorado two days ago. Called me tonight and told me *I* need to research another chest freezer for us.

*Rolleyes*

My garden is put to bed for the season, though I still have KALE! (Who invented that stuff? The Devil? LOL!)

Other than indoor greens and sprouts, I’ll not be up to much until I start veggie & flower seedlings in March. :(

This part of Fall-into-Winter is the WORST for me! BUT come December 21st the days get longer, so there’s that to look forward to. :)

Thanks for the Ping, greeneyes.

We didn't do so well with our potatoes this year, either - carrots came up great, though.
And that's it for the year - cleaned out the gardens, clipped and covered the asparagus, now we wait for the spring again.
Oh, got the "winter quarters" set up for the chickens - we move them from the static coop in the "way back" to a smaller mobile one near the house, screened from the wind by two cords of wood.

Hope to hear good reports from your green house!
Stay warm.

Thanks - it is better. I am not sure what all of a sudden kicked it off, but I’d like to know so I can avoid it.

The first couple of years, I just planted what I had leftover from supermarket garlic cloves. They were so easy, that I ordered some from the catalog.

For the next 5 years, I have just planted what I had left each year from the prior year’s harvest. However, we are eating more and more garlic, so I did order some Siberian garlic from territorial seed co.

I planted around 60 cloves this year, and usually get 6 cloves per planting. Next year, I want to plant even more.

I found out that one of the biggest things that gives me low back pain is.....

Caffeine.

I stopped doing caffeine in February or March and I can’t tell you how much better my back is. The exercises do wonders but if I have caffeine, I will still have slightly nagging pain or spasms.

So now, I only drink decaffeinated coffee, decaffeinated soda and I try to avoid chocolate or anything else with caffeine in it.

I noticed one day that it seemed like my back always hurt right after drinking coffee so I googled something about coffee and low back pain just out of curiosity and desperation...

Turns out there are a lot of people who are very sensitive to caffeine and get low back spasms/pain when they drink
coffee.

I can feel it the next day if I go to McDonald’s and order 1 diet coke so it really is a thing.

I sleep better and get up better in the morning, my skin looks better too.

I used to be a big coffee drinker. However, as sleep issues started to be a concern, I phased out most of it. I drink one cup in the am. Sometimes, a second cup after breakfast.

Then I switch to green or herbal tea. Sometimes I have decaf after dinner-that’s my dessert.

I rarely eat chocolate-too much sugar.

In recent studies, it was found that the coffee drinkers had less of the inflammation that leads to heart attacks.

I doubt that caffeine is my issue with respect to my back.

I also don’t think it keeps me awake. I have had breakfast and coffee and half an hour later gone right to sleep. I seem to have a weird circadian rhythm. Trying to fit my schedule into a normal person’s means I go to bed wide awake, and get up tired, groggy, and dragging.

By the time bedtime comes, I have perked up. It’s frustrating.

Thanks for the ping. Only thing growing is the garlic and still getting a few small tomatoes but the predicted frost tonight could do them in. I have a damm wood rat chewing under my garden shed and if I don’t catch it tonight I will resort to “herbs”. I’m still trying to figure out the new software so I can post photos again...
