The Hebrew Bible has several references to King Hezekiah's reforms and attempts to centralize worship in Jerusalem. 2 Chronicles 29-32 describes his efforts during the first year of his reign to cleanse and refurbish the Temple in Jerusalem, believing that his ancestors had not worshipped the God of Israel dutifully. 2 Kings 18:4 narrates that "he removed the high places (bamot), broke down the pillars (masseboth), and cut down the sacred pole (asherah)."

“It says the latrine was symbolic and never used.”
Perhaps there’s just no evidence it was used, because the roll was called up yonder.

That’s a pretty small target for a guy to hit, especially if a dude is drunk.

Luckily, that wasn't a problem in the ancient world -- men just 'went' wherever they happened to be, women did so but with more attempts at privacy. By Roman times there were public urinals maintained by the fullers, who used urine in the processing of wool. Women also used indoor facilities, but tended not to leave the house that much.
Titus complained of the tax which Vespasian had imposed on the contents of the city urinals. Vespasian handed him a coin which had been part of the first day's proceeds: "Does it smell bad?" he asked. And when Titus said "No" he went on: "That's odd -- it comes straight from the urinal."

Thank you, Tainan! One of these days I will have to write about Central Asia to complete the website. Currently I am also recording a podcast about Southeast Asian history.
