DisplayMate: Apple’s iPhone X has the most color accurate display we’ve ever measured; it is visually indistinguishable from perfect

IPhone X

“Switching from LCDs to OLEDs is a major engineering and manufacturing challenge, so I was eager to test and evaluate the new OLED iPhone X,” Dr. Raymond M. Soneira reports for DisplayMate. “The result: Apple has produced an impressive Smartphone display with excellent performance and accuracy, which we cover in extensive detail below. What makes the iPhone X the best smartphone display is the impressive precision display calibration Apple developed, which transforms the OLED hardware into a superbly accurate, high performance, and gorgeous display, with close to text book perfect calibration and performance!!”

“The absolute color accuracy of the iPhone X is truly impressive,” Soneira reports. “It has an absolute color accuracy of 1.0 JNCD for the sRGB / Red.709 color gamut that is used for most current consumer content, and 0.9 JNCD for the wider DCI-P3 color gamut that is used for 4K UHD TVs and digital cinema. It is the most color accurate display that we have ever measured. It is visually indistinguishable from perfect, and is very likely considerably better than any mobile display, monitor, TV or UHD TV that you have."

The iPhone X matches or sets new Smartphone display performance records for:

Dr. Raymond Soneira, in his technical review of the OLED display of Apple’s new iPhone X says "It is the most color accurate display that we have ever measured. It is visually indistinguishable from perfect, and is very likely considerably better than any mobile display, monitor, TV or UHD TV that you have.”— PING!

Of course, the company web site showing the sweaters to be sold won’t get the color right on their end, so my wife won’t be happy with her purchase. “This isn’t sage! It’s mint! I hate mint!”

At least someone cares about color fidelity and color reproduction.

Rec. 709 is not an easy standard to meet, and the new Rec. 2020 is adding a level of complexity above that.

I am most impressed that Apple can color calibrate the screens at the factory that will meet the specifications.

Anyone who has ever color calibrated a TV, projector or (gag!) a 3 beam projector will understand what a feat this is.

Apple: Making yesterday’s technology just a little better today and charging through the roof for it.

Apple reaches deal with Samsung to buy OLED iPhone displays

That beautiful display is not manufactured by Apple. Samsung phones have always had better displays and cameras than Apple. Yeah, they are slower and have quirks, but for the money and huge variety for apps, they beat Apple hands down.

Well, it could be the neatest thing since sliced bread, but not for me at that price point. Jeez louise.

"(634 nits)"

Haven't heard of that unit before. Considering the traditional meaning of "nit", maybe that wasn't the best choice?

Nit, a unit of luminescence which equals one candela per square meter.

My Sony phone looks great to me. Most people don’t care about having ‘perfect’ display just a sharp image that’s easy to read.

Apple: Making yesterday’s technology just a little better today and charging through the roof for it.

Uh, what part of "it’s the best Display I’ve ever tested" and "precision display calibration (which) Apple developed, which transforms the OLED hardware into a superbly accurate, high performance, and gorgeous display, with close to text book perfect calibration and performance!!” falls under your caracterization of "yesterday’s technology?" How about the A11 Bionic Processor in a mobile phone that’s benchmarking faster than many desktop processors, and is certainly faster than every single competitors’ processor out there by a margin of better than 50%? Or how about Apple’s Neural Engine Processor also included in this mobile phone that can make 600 BILLION calculations per seconds? In a mobile device? Do either of those advances that NONE of the competitors can even approach count as "yesterday’s technology," freedum2003?

You Apple Hate Brigade members sure know how to use your abysmal ignorance to demonstrate how little you grasp reality just so you can toss out an anti-Apple facturds lacking any semblance of truth.

That beautiful display is not manufactured by Apple. Samsung phones have always had better displays and cameras than Apple. Yeah, they are slower and have quirks, but for the money and huge variety for apps, they beat Apple hands down.

You do know that DisplayMate has tested every Display on every phone that Samsung has made, Dr. Soneira even praises Samsung for the quality of manufacturing that went into these displays. Not one of Samsung’s phone displays came anywhere close to this iPhone X Display. He even contrasts the differences with Samsung’s best displays toward the end of the tech review. . . and some are striking how much they miss the new mark established by this one.

It was Apple tech that designed them and Apple tech that designed the CALIBRATION technology that made them so good, not Samsung. Samsung had the manufacturing capacity to make these displays, it was Apple who conceived and designed them and laid them out, and determined the calibration technology that reproduces the correct colors in all situations.

Before you make such sweeping statements as "Samsung phones have always had better displays and cameras than Apple," you’d better actually take the time to read the review.

Like I said, it could be the best thing since sliced bread, but at that price point it’s just not for me. I buy my cars the same way, BTW. Reliability, durability, value. And I get over 200,000 miles on my cars. I look at cell phones the same way. I have a big screen smart phone because of my vision issues. I’ve had it for years. Sure didn’t pay a grand for it. Won’t replace it until I can’t repair it or it no longer meets my needs. And when I do eventually replace it, it won’t be with a model that runs the cost of 2 or 3 car payments. That just not how I roll. Not knocking Apple. Their product at that price point is just not for me.

As I said — Apple just makes existing products a little better. Nice to see they made a good screen and have sped it up. For $1K it damn well better be the best one in the history of mankind.

I will bet in a side by side comparison 99% of people could not tell the difference between the 10 and the S8. And I have had retinal scan and face recognition on my devices for over a year

You can bet the 11 will be incrementally better still. And fanbois will line up all night to spend 3 to 4 times what extremely close (or better) alternatives would cost.

That’s OK — people without blinders just LOAO each time.
