Today at Cornwall Airport Newquay in southern England, the Bloodhound SSC completed its first test run with Royal Air Force Wing Commander and Guinness land speed record holder Andy Green at the wheel. According to the Bloodhound team, the car accelerated from 0-200 mph in around eight seconds, generating 2g of force, and making a hell of a lot of a noise.

The car is powered by the same jet engine as the Eurofighter Typhoon. The engine produces in afterburner 20,000 lbs of thrust. The attempt in 2020 will be made in South Africa not the Bonneville Salt Flats.

what’s going to hold it to the ground? I expect a stunning display when it breaks the sound barrier while on the ground.

Craig Breedlove was the first man to go over 600mph at Bonneville in 1965, and his wife also drove the jet powered Spirit of America to over 300mph. I used to have both of their autographs from a Seattle car show back in ancient times.

Yeah, but the gas mileage is terrible. Even worse inside the city.

I hope the tires are speed rated. Tires that can go 1000mph impresses more than the engine.

The rubber tires were from a prior project so they just made wheels to fit them. They use those for low speed 350mph and lower and for rolling around on the cement runways.
When they get serious about the real speed they switch to these.

95kg each
operating speed in excess of 10,000 RPM
50,000gs at the rim.
Cold forged aluminum/zink alloy '7037'

Not too bad for last centuries technology.

I always thought they should introduce reversed wings to assist with holding these on the ground. Since the lift would be reversed and instead provide a force down. Of course that would also likely increase the amount of friction imposed on the tires a bit I suppose...
