Even if terrible reviews and the exploding scandal around Harvey Weinstein were not an issue, past as prologue informs us that director George Clooney’s Suburbicon would still be in trouble. While the Hollywood bubble, which includes the lackey entertainment media, likes to pretend Clooney is a Big Star, moviegoers disagree, most especially when it comes to the films he directs.
Other than the forgettable mess that was Monuments Men, which squeaked over $75 million (and probably still lost money), American audiences have expressed a startling indifference towards everything Clooney’s directed. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) grossed just $16 million, Leatherheads (2002) was a total washout at $32 million, Good Night, and Good Luck (2005) crashed and burned at $31.5 million, and 2011’s The Ides of March stalled out at $41 million.
The same is almost as true of the movies Clooney stars in. Unless you want to count his extended cameo in Gravity (2013), without the help of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, and the word “Oceans” in the title, it has been 17 years since Clooney appeared in something that reached $100 million — and the real star of that particular film was a giant wave.
Another problem for Clooney is that over a 21-year film career that began in 1996 with Miramax’s From Dusk Till Dawn, nothing Clooney has been a part of has stuck. What I mean is that not a single movie he has made has stood the test of time; not a single title is iconic. In simpler terms, Clooney has no Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Heat, Forrest Gump, JFK, Do the Right Thing, Fargo, Zodiac, Titanic, Iron Man, Boogie Nights, Malcolm X, Matrix, or Trainspotting on his resume. Nothing we will still be talking about in 50 years.

It looks somewhat interesting but not enough to blow money on tickets, I’ll rent the DV some weeks from now.
In that movie, he played a man who was incredibly stupid and vain, an utter zero. He ends up getting arrested while trying to escape to Venezuela, which was his choice because it has no extradition treaty with the United States.
“O Brother, Where Art Thou?” was good. That’s it.
May be time for a Killer Tomatoes franchise reboot?
It is my sincere hope that the George Clooney’s of the world will go away and that we will end up with artists rather than hacks who kiss the right butts and let it be known that they hold all the “right” opinions.

He's a movie star who doesn't make any good movies. Oh he has been good in a couple of Coen brothers flicks. And I really liked Out of Sight, but that was based on an Elmore Leonard book and directed by Stephen Soderbergh. Hard to screw that up.
My favorite Clooney movie and performance is “Intolerable Cruelty,” rom-com with Catherine Zeta Jones at the peak of her powers.
I absolutely loved that movie.
One of the few comedies I re-watch.
FWIW, I really liked From Dusk Till Dawn.
Doesn’t sound as if he even needed to “act” for that one, he could just be himself.
BTW, the reviews have so far been overwhelmingly negative.
Peter Jackson could make it work but it would have to be told in 3 trilogies of 3-part movies.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was great in that. As I said, another Coen brothers flick.
I was in Korea when that came out. Had a friend tell me to see it and that he thought it was great. I did not care for it.
The only thing I can think of that I liked was One Fine Day. But I may be the only guy. Can't stand his politics and I just can't set that aside. Same for Matt Damon, Leo,.....
The one guy I like that I know is a big lib is Ben Affleck. It seems he tries to keep it to himself.

Monuments Men, Leatherheads, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind: none of those was going to break any box office records.
Clooney brought in money with the Oceans movies, so Hollywood lets him do what he wants so long as he doesn't actually lose a lot of money.
Clooney also played a lawyer in “The Descendants” and a fixer for lawyers in “Michael Clayton.” He was good in those movies too.
I thought “Hail Caesar!,” the most recent Coen brothers movie, was not good, and Clooney was not good in it.
I find the Cohen Bros. movies to be a mixed bag. Never fully enjoy any of them that I've seen but they are watchable (at least until the narratives go off the rails).
