Make-up, hair dye, and tattoos are some of the ways that people inject colour into their lives, but a woman from Canada may have taken it a step too far by getting an eye tattoo.
In September, 24-year-old model Catt Gallinger had purple ink injected into the white of her eye.
Now, she may have to pay a heavy price for her decision, after the eye tattoo gone wrong may soon leave her partially blind in one eye.
She said in a Facebook post that her tattoo artist had used a needle of the wrong size and over-injected undiluted ink during the procedure. This caused bleeding and tearing in the sclera (white of the eye).
Accompanying her post were startling photos of the botched procedure.
One photo showed her with 'purple tears' running down the side of her face while others showed infected eye tissue stained by the pigment, as well as the same eye being swollen shut.
Besides blurry vision, the young woman suffered pain and irritation in her eye and sought help at a hospital.
Gallinger was later referred to an eye institute where she was told that she may not recover from her diminished vision in the affected eye.
In the weeks following the incident, painkillers and steroid eye drops have helped to reduce the swelling and pain, but she would still require surgery to remove the remaining ink in her eye.
Gallinger hopes that her experience will serve as a cautionary tale to others who are considering getting eye tattoos, as the irreversible cosmetic procedure has been gaining popularity in recent years.
Her case is only one of the latest cases of eye tattoos gone wrong.
The American Journal of Ophthalmology Case Reports recently documented the cases of two Mexican youths who developed complications after getting eye tattoos.
One man experienced swelling and deteriorating eyesight in the affected eye and developed hypersensitivity to light. He was subsequently treated for inflammation and bleeding in the eye tissues.
The other man developed nodules in the white of his tattooed eye. An ultrasound revealed that they contained the orange pigment that was supposed to be spread over the surface of his eye. He was prescribed steroids and antibiotics but did not follow up on his treatment.
However, not everyone is sympathetic to Gallinger's plight and said she was ignorant and had landed herself in a sorry state.
In response, the young woman said that she was not looking for pity or trying to ask for donations to fund her medical treatment.
In a video clip, Gallinger said:"I took my eyesight for granted and trusted someone I shouldn't have. And even if this heals, my eyesight is not going to be back."

Note the neck tattoos. She’s certainly not a top “model” with those. No top agency accepts those. This woman may just be bizarre.

Stupid can sometimes be expensive. One of those prison shows on the boob tube reported on two cellmates that had tattooed each other’s eyeballs red - with no vision damage, supposedly. It didn’t help the appearance of either one, though.
Good grief...why didn’t she ram a red hot poker into her eye and get it over with?
