Allowed Windows 10 latest update/build to run on my PC last night. It ended shortly before I went to bed, and I shut down the PC.
The morning I could not execute my Win 7 games - Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Freecell, Majong. All the "run as administrator" and "compatibility" and "compatibility troubleshooting stuff" didn't do a dam thing. NOTHING, not even reinstall of the games and then all the compatibility stuff again worked. Nada, zilch.,
I had expended considerable effort from XP to Win 7 and then to Win getting versions of these games that would run, after each Windows version transitions.
Each time I had to jump through some hoops to get them working again, but once they did in Win 10, I had passed through previous Win 10 regular updates (not the same as a new build) and kept them working.
This time I had to roll back the whole Win 10 update that installed last night.
Legally I know Microsoft is not required to keep these older style games running under new Windows versions.
Regardless, I sure wish the threat of a class action lawsuit convinced them to quit screwing it up, as each time some geeks can be found that show how to do some tricks (that Microsoft knows about) to get the games running again. So, what they have been doing, from XP to Win 7, from Win 7 to Win 8, from Win 8 to Win 10 and in Win 10 updates, that screw up the games, has been unnecessary and preventable, if they - Microsoft - cared to put some attention to it.
Just makes me blood-pressure-up-mad each time.
About a year ago, I bought a Linux Mint laptop.
Linux is okay for basics — wordprocessing, email, etc., but it is still lacking in many ways.
For, example, the Linux Firefox will not run all of the extensions/add-ons that the Windows FF will run.
Also, I tried to run WINE. Every Windows program I tried to install/run failed partially or completely.
I am still looking for a way to watch FoxSportsGo, ESPN and NBCSports. Every browser fails. They may load partially but will not connect. I periodically check forums and try some of the suggestions, but so far NADA.
Use a Restore point from before the update then turn off updates.
When I can no longer run W7 I am finished with Windows. I have a Linux computer, which is what I am on now, and a W7 box which I retain because of legacy photo and scanner programs which will not run on 10 or on Linux (both are originally for W95), and the games. The lack of a toolbar on this linux is inconvenient but I am getting used to it.
Your comment, “ It is not your convenience that interests them, its your trackability and access (in the cloud) to your stuff that they seek to gain awareness of - awareness for THEIR purposes.” goes for more than Windows 10.
I implore everyone to consider those words in relation to you every action.
That’s what I did - and fortunately MS left me with a restore point before last nights update.
Is your NVIDIA GPU on your motherboard or is it a stand-alone graphics card?
“Coming soon” and no price.
I had an issue where menu would come up but would not boot- i had to use that boot repair program to get it working- there’s probably other ways to fix it but I’m not real versed in linux so i went with the program- You’ll have to read the instructions carefully- print them out- as it can be a little confusing- but it worked well- Hopefully you can solve it by just reinstalling grub- that would be the easiest method, and you won’t have to have a separate program to do so-
I never was a Vista fan - considered it a pile of junk. Win7 and XP were the two best OS that Microsoft came up with. 8 was almost as bad as Vista, but that may have been planned to prep folks to be willing to jump to 10.
MS could probably make good money if they would keep selling a clean version of 7, but it doesn’t fit in with their current business model.
I am on W10 64 bit 16299.rs3, just played Klondike no priblems
You are so right.
I’m sure someone at Google has an algorithm just for compiling FreeRepublic stuff, and - using everything else done from the same PC, ever - connecting it to our real identity. They don’t even need the NSA to do it. Facebook is trying to do it as well.
[[Linux is okay for basics wordprocessing, email, etc., but it is still lacking in many ways.]]
True- BUT it is nearly virus proof- very easy to update (unlike windows 7 which could literally take days and countless hours figuring out why it is so dang slow)- and it’s super fast- especially with an SSD drive :)
Got so sick of combating attempted viruses with windows that that was really the main reason i switched-

You coudl run windows in a virtual box on linux and I believe it’s IE woudl show those for you?
I think you can download a win 10 iso file, run it, and not register it- it will be ‘crippled’ but will still work fine- you’ll just get a logo in lower corner, and you won’t be able to customize some aspects of windows 10- but it will still function fine- unless they have changed all that? I installed a win 10 in a virtual box vm almost a year or so ago and it’s still working in it’s ‘crippled’ mode- some folks early on had said that it would stop working at some point- but so far it hasn’t-
Give it a try- you might get back your sports shows and the best thing is that if you should get a virus in a vm- you can simply power it off without saving when you shut down the vm, and you won’t be infected it’s basically running it in a sandbox environment- you can have hte best of both worlds- but note that vms of course won’t utilize your video card- but you shouldn’t need it for watching online stuff I don’t think-
Unfortunately I did not save a Win 8 restore point, nor did I copy all of Windows as of Win 8 to a backup place. With win 10 1st install you had 30 days to go back to your Win 7 or 8.1. After that the restore point back to it was lost - unless you made it yourself.
Yes, that’s exactly how I’m using Windows Mint. I’ve got virtual machines all the way from NT4 server to Windows 10. Although, I don’t think it’s able to run Win 10 version 1703 yet.
Where did you get Klondike? Do you still have/know the web source?
“Likely I wont run another Win 10 update.”
Do you have a choice? I’ve heard, and believe, that it’s done whether you want it or not. I have Win 10 and despise it with the heat of a thousand burning suns.
DH wants me to buy a nice piece of jewelry for my birthday this month. I don’t need no stinkin’ jewelry. I want something useful and am looking at HP and Dell, both of which sell new Windows 7 computers.
