Monstrous 1-ton ocean sunfish caught in Russia's far east, thrown to the bears (PHOTO)

The group of Sakhalin fishermen did not expect to find the Lovecraftian monster in their nets as they took to the sea for smaller fry on Saturday. The enormous fish, considered a delicacy in some cultures, proved to be a dead weight as it didn't make it to the shore fresh. Russian fishermen pulled a 1,100 kg ocean sunfish which got stuck in their net in the waters near Iturup island, according to Sakhalin info. Also known as moonfish and mola, the bizarre-looking creature is the heaviest bony fish on Earth.

“There has been no such specimen that I can remember; there is the dolphinfish, also known for its size and reaching 1.5 meters, but I have never seen a sunfish weighing more than a ton here before,” said fisherman Artur Balkarov.

By the time the fascinating behemoth was brought ashore three days later, it had begun rotting. The fishermen had no choice but take it to a dumping site where locals bring their fishing waste for wild animals, including bears.

While trade in moonfish meat is prohibited in the EU, a number of Asian countries, such as Japan and Taiwan, see it as delicious treat and handy ingredient in traditional medicine.

Saw quite a few of them while on an albacore boat off the SoCal coast. Huge fish with a very small mouth, swims along like it doesn’t have a care in the world. Of course we dropped a line in to try to catch it, but it showed absolutely no interest no matter the bait/lure. They do jump and make quite a splash.

We were sailing between Martha’s Vineyard and land, when we saw one close to the boat. Just rolling from side to side with the top fin sticking out of the water. BIG! But we were not concerned, even tho it was the first time we’d seen one. It was quite placid.

I had one of those once in a 20 gallon aquarium.

A goldfish ate it.

There was this experiment to determine which type of freshwater fish was the toughest.

They put a Trout, a Northern Pike and a Piranha in a large tank. Somebody threw in a goldfish as a joke.

At the end of the week, do you know what was still floating around in that tank?

Piranha crap.

The goldfish lasted about three minutes.

I think not even Stedman has done that.

That supposed to be someone everyone knows? Never heard of him.

Fresh Opah goes for $18/lb here in Hawaii. Very mild flavored white meat fish. Sauteed (not too long) or lightly panko breaded. I use butter/oil with garlic, and homemade tarter sauce.

Very observant!! Looks a lot like him! Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) is only about 47 years old tho....wonder if it is a relative of his.

During the recent hurricane I went several days without caring for my pond and the fish in it.

When I finally finished attending to all the serious matters, and checked in on my fishes, I made a gross discovery.

During the storm a bird fell in the pond. Whether it was alive of dead I do not know, but the Koi, goldfish, and minnows are that bird down to the bone. Everything but the elbows.

Wife did not believe me until I scooped out the pelvis and sorta flinged it at her from across the yard..

I took your advice and threw a bird carcass at my wife as an expression of my great love for her.

Evidently, this ritual does not work outside of Texas.

She knocked me on the head with one of those Swiffer mops.
