Officials stated that using copper mugs to serve beverages with a pH balance of below 6.0 could cause copper to leach into the drink.
The pH of a traditional Moscow Mule which is made with vodka, ginger beer and lime juice is well below 6.0, according to the bulletin. Other examples of beverages with a pH below 6.0 include fruit juice and wine.
When copper and copper alloy surfaces contact acidic foods, copper may be leached into the food, health officials stated. High concentrations of copper are poisonous and have caused foodborne illness.
Health officials said establishments in Iowa may no longer use the signature copper mug to serve the cocktail unless they are lined with another material.

I’ve seen copper mugs these days, I wonder “why?”.
Uhh..isn’t that copper plated stainless steel? Wait...I just checked...it’s stainless steel!
Moscow Mule?
Why not have an American drink....like a Singapore Sling or something.
Overly hyped nonsense. Millions of homes have copper water pipes with no problems.
I can see where Moscow might have Reindeer, Deer, Cattle, Moose, Sheep, Pigs, etc. , but mules?, not so much.
Unless its pH is below 6, water through copper pipes should be fine. That’s the difference.
I thought they lined this stuff with tin.
The Moscow mule is a nice drink! This copper nonsense is more fake news, like second hand smoke.
I thought this was another story about Mueller the mule.
Water has a ph of 7. Which means it is safe to run through copper tubing.
Yeah Tyrants, the copper water pipes transport water. They are not putting vodka, lime juice, and other food items into the water pipes. Try to stay on topic. And copper pots for cooking have got the copper on the outside; not on the inside. Home made stills might be a problem though. I always thought the still on MASH had a copper coil.

Mint Juleps are a safer choice. Not served in copper mugs. Strictly Silver -- or maybe Pewter. Which is fine. Totally harmless. Except for the lead in the Pewter.
“Millions of homes have copper water pipes with no problems.”
yeah, but the REASON there are no problems is that the average municipal water supply has a pH around 7.0, which is neither acidic nor alkaline, i.e, neutral. Also, note that the pH scale is logarithmic, not linear, so that each digit below 7.0 represents a 10-fold increase in acidity.
so, no, not nonsense.
You're right on that count, Trumpet. But sometimes home water pipes DO deliver beer at the faucets. It's a feature, not a bug.

Here are the ones for the hoity-toity.

The pH of water is neutral. It’s the acid in the Moscow Mules that are causing the copper to leach out of the mugs, or so I understand.
Bob Dylan song: “Copper Kettle”
Get you a copper kettle, get you a copper coil
Fill it with new made corn mash and never more you’ll toil
You’ll just lay there by the juniper while the moon is bright
Watch them just a-filling in the pale moonlight.

That’s what I was thinking. How long would the concoction need to be in the cup to cause issues? And I remember reading that copper mugs are the way to go precisely because they interact with the copper.
I am guessing that the 5 or so Moscow Mules I might have in the course of a year are not going to hurt me....
How many times have I told you not to put flowers in my drink?
