The New York Times is facing blowback on social media after publishing an essay by an African-American reporter who accused white women of racism for not ceding space on city sidewalks to black men.
In a Wednesday essay titled "Was That Racist," reporter Greg Howard singled out white women for forcing him "off the sidewalk completely" when walking towards him, not allowing a straight path.
"In seven years of living and walking here, Ive found that most people walk courteously but that white women, at least when Im in their path, do not," Howard writes.

“Gee, wouldnt a gentleman of any color step aside for a woman of any color?”
Not if you are a black racist. They think someone should carry them to their destination.
My experience is that anyone walking alone gets short shrift from couples and groups.

Agree.
Sometimes when these groups are approaching, I just stop and stand still, maybe directing my attention somewhere besides them, like a store window or ...
Works fine. They deflect. Now if they used NBA rules on charging and moving blocks, I would end up flat on the sidewalk, with the foul on me.
There is this thing I’ve observed over the years.... I’m a dreaded white male; in the supermarket, there is a particular type of person who, when they get the chance, will block my path, slow down to a crawl, head held high.... after an extraordinarily long time, they will feign noticing me, and with theatrical polish, will apologize in the most sophisticated tone they can muster. It happens so often I imagine them practicing and comparing notes.
Who you ask? Well, they’re always overweight, overperfumed, raised in the 1960s or so, and very, very entitled.
Close enough! :)
If white women act like they’re avoiding or getting out of black men’s way, then they’re evil racists who are assuming the black men will accost them or steal their purses!
Also, if a white woman is “continuing straight,” and not “changing her course,” that means the black man can see what direction she’s heading. When you can see the direction and speed another person is heading, get out of their way! Why should she change course and have to weave all over the place just so HE’S not inconvenienced?
Why don’t we just pass a law that being white is illegal and anything whites do is officially wrong. Just get it the hell over with.
Oh man, will it happen? Will we soon see broad shouldered white women going around manspreading and mansplaining? I shudder at the thought.
Oh, I HATE cell phone culture. They don’t even look up when they cross streets, like they think they’re safe in their little bubble... fools.
I prefer NHL rules and assume that one of them has the puck in her purse.
Many don’t have the faintest notion of manners, such as this “Journ-O-List”
Up to a point. However the write claims he was driven to the curb or even off the street by the particular actions of a very specific demographic - namely white women. Who, in NYC, will be overwhelmingly liberal and Democrats, and Hillary supporters.
I have the Times Square Webcam up right now...
Watching people walk around...Everyone seems courteous and polite...Tourists looking all over the place....
One thing I noticed...It seems that over half the people are wearing backpacks...
Open a door for a young white or black woman. Wait for acknowledgement. Let me know how that works out.
Ding, ding! Post of the day!
I think if someone walks around looking to be offended, they won’t be disappointed.
Another thing I noticed on the Times Square Webcam...
90% of the people are white....
Sounds like it is either the title of the next Roger Waters album or next James Bond movie
I’m a white female who gets buggy bumped on my backside in the checkout line by elderly white women. As if bumping me will get the three people ahead in line moving any faster. Face it, people are rude these days.
As for the black guy in the article, he fully admits he’s in the women’s path. So, he should get out of their path or take a taxi.
Somebody started coaching certain black high school and college age people into intentionally causing others to give way to them back in the 90’s. This was especially common in enclosed shopping malls. Sometimes it was groups walking three or four abreast, in which case you could see them coming. I’d usually stop and look in a different direction from them, forcing them to go around.
The individuals were especially annoying, they’d make a beeline for you deliberately, trying to force you to step aside. This was really annoying, it was pure territorialism, no different from a dog cocking it’s leg on a tree and I refused to play along. I’d stop in my tracks and stare. They’d usually make a “ppsshht” noise and intentionally bump into my shoulder, hard, as they passed. That kind of crap is why I began avoiding inclosed shopping malls in favor of stores where I could just park outside and walk right in.
This guy is infected with the same dumb, hostile, militant mindset. If somebody is going along minding their own business and not trying to prove some stupid point, I’ll gladly give way, open doors, try to be accommodating and helpful. But, if they’re deliberately trying to provoke a reaction, they’ll get one from me but not a submissive one, I stand my ground.
I don’t care what they call me anymore, the game has gotten very, very old.
My pet peeve is entitled guys in suits walking three or four abreast with their hands in their pockets. I get as close to the curb as I can and just before I’m pushed off the sidewalk, I apply a deltoid of fairly impressive size (260 lbs plus overhead presses) to the one next to the curb. I then apologize as much like Uriah Heap as I can manage. I hope it’s a learning experience.
