Shiloh sailor reported overboard now found hiding in engine room

A sailor from the cruiser Shiloh whom Navy officials said fell overboard last week, triggering a massive search-and-rescue effort, has been discovered on board.

Presumed dead after going missing June 8, Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 3rd Class Peter Mims reportedly hid himself in one of the engine rooms, according to two sources familiar with the situation.

It is unclear how Mims survived a week in the engineering space or where he was hiding. He will be flown off Shiloh for evaluation soon.

Mims' disappearance prompted a massive, 50-hour search-and-rescue effort off the coast of Japan that included Japanese Coast Guard and naval forces.

Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from the carrier Ronald Reagan along with a Navy P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, the destroyers John S. McCain and McCampbell, and the Reagan itself all assisted Shiloh in the search for the missing sailor, according to releasse from U.S. 7th Fleet during the search.

Japanese Coast Guard ship Kudaka also assisted in the search. A Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ship and a second Japanese Coast Guard ship assisted early in the search that combed more than 5,500 square miles of water off Japan.

Navy officials from U.S. 7th Fleet did not immediately comment Thursday about the status of Mims.

In a statement posted on the 7th Fleet website, the Reagan's strike group commander said he was relieved by the discovery.

“We are thankful to have found our missing shipmate and appreciate all the hard work of our Sailors and Japanese partners in searching for him,” Rear Adm. Charles Williams said. “I am relieved that this Sailor’s family will not be joining the ranks of Gold Star Families that have sacrificed so much for our country.”

Mims enlisted in the Navy in February 2014 and reported to Shiloh in August of that year. He was advanced to petty officer third class in August 2015, according to the release. Mims has earned the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon and Sea Service Ribbon. Mims was frocked to petty officer third class in May, according to a Navy spokesman.

Flog him around the fleet.

Instead, he’ll probably get lifetime benefits for PTSD. A petty officer probably looked at him ‘mean’.

So I suppose you supported PTSD benefits for the soldier who had a drill instructor yell at him in basic training? Or do you just favor sailors who cost the taxpayers 10’s of thousands of dollars for a useless search because they are goldbricking?

You may think encouraging such behavior is a conservative value, but I do see the benefit in making an example of him.

If duty and honor are, in your book, dirty words, then I wear your contempt with pride.

I don't comprehend why someone would do that unless he is mentally ill. In my Navy career I spent time om 3 different ships, two of them for reserve cruises. On one of those the morale was so bad I asked lieutenant in charge of my division what was wrong with this ship. He took a piece of my note paper and wrote on it, "XO." I didn't speak to one sailor there who contemplated life sans Navy in his immediate future.

In my two weeks there I don't recall ever talking to the XO but well knew that the XO makes or breaks a ship.

I was a sonar tech. My ships screened for carriers when we weren't showing the flag on solo runs. In one 18 month period we screened for the USS Roosevelt (CV 42) and the USS Saratoga (CV 60).

In my 20 months on one destroyer we witnessed two plane disasters and were tasked with the job of finding plane wreckage and two dead pilots.

We found a tiny bit of wreckage of one plane and no pilots.

Sometimes I think the odds of finding dead sailors after disasters takes us to the miracle realm.

If this guy isn't a candidate for a mental ward, he really needs to spend some time in a federal prison to contemplate what he put his own shipmates through.

Huh? What’s your problem? Maybe you think he should get a medal?

For those like myself who are not familiar with the term frocked used in the article:

In the United States military, frocking is the practice of a commissioned or non-commissioned officer selected for promotion wearing the insignia of the higher grade before the official date of promotion (the "date of rank"). An officer who has been selected for promotion may be authorized to "frock" to the next grade.

So being frocked is a good thing. I wonder now then, why he hid as he did.Something strange going on here for sure.

I once passed out in an unused rack not my own after a night of drinking and slept through my sub leaving port. Missed my duty station during the departure. They figured I went AWOL. I finally woke up and stumbled out of the rack. They freaked out at me a little.

It’s a shame that so much time, effort and expense was made looking for this guy. On the other hand, maybe he was just trying to avoid attending the latest transgender sensitivity training seminar.

I agree PAR. Now, unless there are some REALLY extenuating circumstances, that they are not telling us, they need to jack his a$$ up to high cotton. He got nothing coming.
