THE Godfather has pipped The Empire Strikes Back to be voted greatest movie of all time.
The 1972 Mafia epic that starred Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone topped a poll by film mag Empire of 20,000 readers.
At third was Christopher Nolans 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight, for which Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his performance as The Joker.
The Shawshank Redemption came fourth, despite often being hailed best-ever film online.
La La Land released six months ago came 62nd.
The all-time top ten are as follows:
1. The Godfather
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. The Dark Knight
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Pulp Fiction
6. Goodfellas
7. Raiders of the Lost Ark
8. Jaws
9. Star Wars
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Godfather and several others NOT ON THE LIST are better films.
Love the equipment. They actually tried to make a Tiger tank out a T-34. All kinds of period equipment.
My biggest annoyance with 'Patton' is how German tanks are just National Guard tanks with crosses painted on them. And then Bradley says German tanks are diesels. Oof.
But then the 'Kelly's' sniper takes a Mosin Nagant into the church belltower...
The 'Fargo' series on FX is actually good, especially the 1st season with Billy Bob Thornton.
Takes place in the same 'Fargo' universe, just at different time periods if that makes any sense.
Other Italian faves are Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, É La Nave Va, Seven Beauties, Swept Away (the original Lina Wertmuller version) and and Il Postino.
JAWS II. Everyone in the theater was rooting FOR THE SHARK!
I’m sorry that “Frozen” did not make the list, a thriller about people who were stuck on a ski lift with the ski slope closing and a blizzard moving in.
The Maltese Falcon ...
What? No GIANT CLAW??
Never heard of ,,,,
GONE WITH THE WIND.
???
Loved The Departed seen it four times. Fantastic cast. Also loved Scorcese's Gangs of New York.
Which reminds me of Daniel Day-Lewis, which reminds me of A Room with a View with Day-Lewis, Helena Bonham-Carter and Maggie Smith, if you like Edwardian English romances set in Italy. Loved it.
Speaking of Maggie Smith, The Prime of Miss Jean Brody, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Which reminds me of Bill Nighy, which reminds me of Love Actually, my favorite Christmas movie, except for A Christmas Story with Ralphie and his air rifle.
De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum.
For my money, the biggest casting mistake of all time was Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. That role was meant for Robert Duvall.
If Chinatown is on the list, Bonnie and Clyde, Easy Rider and McCabe and Mrs. Miller have to go first. And the original M.A.S.H.
I see nothing from the Golden Age or any of the classic post-war European Films. Too narrow a list.
Citizen Kane was the first film to introduce a number of cinematic techniques that are common place today but were revolutionary in its day. They also took on a controversial target much as if somebody did a movie today on George Soros that made him out to be a crude, selfish megalomaniac instead of the Santa Claus for all matter of liberal causes.
It fully deserves to be in the Top 5 by any serious film historian.
