THE Godfather has pipped The Empire Strikes Back to be voted greatest movie of all time.
The 1972 Mafia epic that starred Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone topped a poll by film mag Empire of 20,000 readers.
At third was Christopher Nolans 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight, for which Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his performance as The Joker.
The Shawshank Redemption came fourth, despite often being hailed best-ever film online.
La La Land released six months ago came 62nd.
The all-time top ten are as follows:
1. The Godfather
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. The Dark Knight
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Pulp Fiction
6. Goodfellas
7. Raiders of the Lost Ark
8. Jaws
9. Star Wars
10. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
They totally missed the best EVER........”Patton”
I have no argument with this.
Yeah, I see no old movies in the Top 10. Really?
Nor do I.
Good but ridiculous list. Shawshank Rebellion? Give me a break.
Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Strangelove, Ben Hur, Forbidden Planet, 10 Commandments, On the Waterfront, The Hustler, Marty, Longest Day, so many others.
Citizen Kane was great.
So says a bunch of millennial film fans. Most of them have probably never seen a black and white film, not even “Shchindler’s List.”
This is a pretty weak list. These are popular movies. But everyone has their own best. It has as much to do with experiences and where you were in life as it does with filmmaking.
Not a single comedy in the top 10? “Some Like it Hot”? “Animal House”? “Blazing Saddles”?
I agree with number 1, but the rest are open to negotiation.
Gone With The Wind
2001: A Space Odyssey
Rocky
King Kong (1933)
The Longest Day
Metropolis
The Ten Commandments
Psycho
Airplane!
Blazing Saddles
Any of those should be in the top ten.
Godfather II was better. A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott as Scrooge. The Searchers, Kelley’s Heroes, The Enemy Below, The Thin Man and Night People are worth a watch.
i would put Raising Arizona in there.
I see that Megaforce didn’t make the list - bummer.
Hopefully someone else will get a laugh.
Brando, thankfully, had very little to do with the film, and it would have been significantly improved had someone else been cast in his role.
Nice to see a top 10 list without Citizen Kane. I know, all those thousands of critics can’t be wrong, but I guess I just didn’t get it.
I woulda put Unforgiven in the top 10. And Fargo.
If the Shawshank Rebellion is as good as the original, I’d give it a spot, too. ;-/
Patton ?
2001 A Space Odyssey
