Extreme geothermal activity discovered beneath New Zealand’s Southern Alps
Science Daily ^ | 6/1/2017 | Rupert Sutherland, et al

An international team, including University of Southampton scientists, has found unusually high temperatures, greater than 100°C, close to Earth's surface in New Zealand -- a phenomenon typically only seen in volcanic areas such as Iceland or Yellowstone, USA.

The researchers made the discovery while boring almost a kilometre into the Alpine Fault, the major tectonic boundary between the Australian and Pacific plates -running the length of the country's South Island. The team was working to better understand what happens at a tectonic plate boundary in the build-up to a large earthquake.

The Deep Fault Drilling Project (DFDP) borehole, was drilled at Whataroa to the north of Franz Josef Glacier and discovered extremely hot, highly pressured groundwater flowing near to the fault line. Water at temperatures of more than 100°C is normally only found at depths of over three kilometres, but in this case was encountered at just over 600m depth.

In an article published in the international journal Nature, computer models are used show these high temperatures result from a combination of the uplift of hot rocks along the tectonic plate boundary and groundwater flow caused by high mountains close to the Alpine Fault.

This is an area of complicated plate margins and a lot of volcanic and earthquake potential. It is also one of the most beautiful spots on earth.

"Negotiating an underwater tunnel [beneath the ice] to gain the island's interior, those aboard U-33 are amazed to discover a tropical prehistoric world kept warm by volcanic forces.

Here dinosaurs that should be long extinct live and roam, as do a curious race of humanoid savages that appear to exhibit all the various phases of Man's evolutionary development. To survive long enough to repair and replenish the U-boat, wartime enemies must put aside their differences and cooperate with one another. But not everyone is playing from the Kumbaya songbook...

Who needs to burn any fuel when the Earth itself is burning beneath us and we can tap into it to ran massive turbines?

Nicaragua already runs 10% of its electricity on geothermal heat. They are trying to move totally to wind, hydro and geothermal. Not because of the climate change. But because the oil spike in 2007 left them with very little electricity.

Wasn't NZ once a single island that was ripped apart by plate tectonics? Isn't the same thing happening now in Iceland?

There are differences but more similarities between Iceland and New Zealand.

If I remember correctly, back in the 1950s there was a movie about finding dinosaurs at the bottom of the world.

The LAND UNKNOWN (1957).

Well, I'm no geologist, volcanologist or what have you, but the similarities seem quite evident to me. That is why I found the statement; "-- a phenomenon typically only seen in volcanic areas such as Iceland....." to be odd.....especially for a "science" publication.

Gore was only off by a factor between 4 and 5 HUNDRED!
(several million vs 7230 degrees F)

Al Gore: Earth's Interior 'Extremely Hot, Several Million Degrees'

By Noel Sheppard | November 18, 2009

[snip]

CONAN O'BRIEN, HOST: ...to create energy, and it sounds to me like an evil plan by Lex Luthor to defeat Superman. Can you, can you tell me, is this a viable solution, geothermal energy?

AL GORE: It definitely is, and it's a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy - when they think about it at all - in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places there are these incredibly hot rocks, 'cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees, and the crust of the earth is hot ...

[snip]

The physics and astronomy website Physlink contests Gore's absurd assertion:

It is approximately 4000°C [7230°F] at the centre of the Earth.

Who needs to burn any fuel when the Earth itself is burning beneath us and we can tap into it to ran massive turbines?

If the hot-side temperature is only 100°C, the turbines really would have to be massive to produce electricity at economically sustainable rates.

Everything would have to be big; condensers, pipes, boilers. The only thing that wouldn't be oversized would be the generator at the end of the shaft.

The Titanic had a low-pressure steam engine to run its center propeller; it was driven by exhaust steam from the low-pressure side of the two triple-expansion steam engines. The rotor of this turbine was twelve feet long and twelve feet in diameter, with the turbine blades adding another four feet of diameter. It's rated power output was 16000 horsepower, or about 12000 kW.

Modern high-pressure steam turbines are about the same size (though smaller in diameter) and generate more like 300,000 kW, or 25 times the power in about the same space. Of course, the Titanic turbine was primitive compared to modern units, with no advanced alloys, low-precision machining, etc.

Granted, in New Zealand they can probably find hotter reservoirs if they look, but economical electric generation requires fairly high temperatures, at least with current technology.
