'Star Trek: Discovery': Decoding the 1st Trailer of Trek's New Chapter
The first full trailer for "Star Trek: Discovery" hints at a complicated past for one of its main characters, while bringing in famous alien species such as the Vulcans and the Klingons.
"Discovery" is set about 10 years before the original "Star Trek" series that featured Capt. James T. Kirk, Science Officer Spock and other memorable characters.
As such, the trailer focuses heavily on Spock's father, Sarek (played by James Frain). You can see more series here from our sister site Newsarama. But let's take a close look at our first glimpse of Trek's new chapter to see what's in store fans in the final frontier. -SNIP-

I want to see 3 or 4 more seasons. They cancelled it just as it was getting really good.
Yes, a movie would be great as well.
In The Orville (a parody), the captain's ex-wife is assigned as his executive officer.
IDK why peope are surprized by a female and a gay in the new series as ST has always been PC. The only reason there was a black commander in DS9 was because it was “the blacks turn”. In Voyager it was the women’s turn to be Captain. They tried to get their base audience back with Enterprise, but that failed. Now with Disco it’s time to push Gays in Space and my bet there will be as few straight white males as possible. Those that appear will be betas at best.
So, is this the 40th or 50th Star Trek TV series since the original. Or are we over 100 by now?
How unoriginal. The morons who run TV can’t even come up with an original Science Fiction show that stands on its own so they copy Star Trek over and over dozens of time.
A pox on the lost of them. TV is 95% crap today.
Star Trek was Roddenberry’s socialist utopian future. People risked their lives in space and didn’t even get paid! Apparently they were engineered to want to do this.
But Roddenberry wasn’t consistent and the later shows kept drifting around. Must have been the dementia kicking in.
Jack Ryan was never a Congressman. He never held office before or since.
I have watched every episode of Babylon 5, and all the movies. I have watched every episode of star trek, and all the movies. I can safely say that DS9 is vastly superior to Babylon 5.
That movie was so great. Galaxy Quest. One of Tim Allen’s finest works.
Watched first couple of episodes of B5. Didn’t ‘get it’. Never watched another. Thought it was a direct rip off of DS9. And that got Molarry. He just looked like Larry (not moe or curly ). Not that DS9 was great. It was ok.
I prefer my space operas to move through space and not stay in one place.
OMG!
Thank you!
B5 has GOT to be the most overrated science fiction in the history of television.
Sorry people, raising up the writing of a TV show to that of a pulp fiction does not make it any more profound than a pulp fiction.
Yea, it is highly overrated. There are some very good episodes but mostly it’s trash.
I'm guessing the subtext is something to do with erectile dysfunction.
Why the other six people ... er, beings ... are in the photo I couldn't say.
Scott Bakula talks in a loud stage whisper.
He does not speak words normally.
Nice synopsis. I a a fan of all of the above and the new movie series. I think the movies we are seeing now capture the essence of the original cast.
LOL OMG Jim, he’s gay!.
I’d like to scratch her envelope.
and backs up a lot.
I don’t know if it was intentional but the series have created gaps. They even went back to Enterprise and warp speed. These gaps, say of a century or two, create new characters and technology and civilizations to explore and new cast members and characters.
As long as there are chronological gaps, some of us will welcome a new series and when the gaps are filled we’ll take Voyager and go beyond that. How about a Mars colony and exploration outside our solar system up to Enterprise. What is going on on earth that leads to warp drive? How was the federation started. What finally happened to the UN? Who went back to the moon first and last? Or the US and the rest.
It’s a big universe and if God let’s it go on, then the possibility are endless and within the umbrella of Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages........And there are always remakes, did someone say RE-boot DS9?
It is innate in human nature to explore and Star Trek scratches that itch in most of us. I’m 70 and I welcome new series and i only hope they would come at a faster pace.
Live Long and Prosper!
Best wishes!
