Apple fanbois are officially sheeple. Yes, you heard. Deal with it (Merriam-Webster hates Apple?)

Offended? Go hassle Merriam-Webster, not us

Apple fanbois are officially sheeple. So says American dictionary Merriam-Webster.

The American lexicologists added the term of endearment to their tome yesterday, a mere 72 years after its first recorded use in the English language.

Helpfully, and entirely non-inflammatorily, Merriam-Webster's people gave two examples of "sheeple" being used in a sentence. The first was a fairly neutral example of a farmer being rude to his neighbours. The second... well, here it is for your amusement/enragement (delete as appropriate):

Apple's debuted a battery case for the juice-sucking iPhone – an ungainly lumpy case the sheeple will happily shell out $99 for.

A quick bit of (insert your adjectival search engine of choice)-ing reveals this neat little phrase was used by one Doug Criss of CNN in 2015.

Criss himself hadn't said anything on Twitter about being cited by the dictionary and we're not bothered enough to ring him up and ask him what he thinks. It's nearly time for elevenses, after all.

Sheeple was added to the only true dictionary, the Oxford English Dictionary, years ago – it was their word of the day on 6 January 2013. Regardless, it's nice to see our colonial cousins keeping up with the mother tongue. ®

The ever-sharp-tongued Brit Register has done it again.

But really, it's Merriam Webster that used the Apple fanbois == sheeple example.

Has M-W joined the ranks of Apple-Haters?

MacBooks are engineered quite nicely. Definitely worth the extra $1500.

Why buy a $750 Acer laptop like a common peasant when you can buy similarly spec-d MacBook for $2500. And have the opportunity to upgrade to the latest model within 12 months.

I hate it when dictionaries decide to “add words”. They always end up adding words like twerk”.

Last year I got the S8 and then later my neighbor and friend got a new iPhone.

He was adamant that the iPhone was better in everyway. End of discussion.

Last week there was a thread here that proclaimed the new iPhone to be faster than the S8.

The article failed to mention that the present iPhones sold are not compatible with the new Gigabit LTE being rolled out while the S8’s are.

Who cares if you app loads fractionally slower if your download comes in 10x faster.

Some of us buy Apple because it’ll still be going strong in ten years or more rather than being reduced to a useless pile of plastic and electronics in a few years’ time.

The style-conscious who have just got to have the latest and greatest from Apple are a boon to people like me, there are excellent refurbs for a great price due to their egos.

So, you don’t have to buy inferior, knock-off junk just to keep cost in line. You should try it sometime.

Merriam-Webster online dictionary takes the opportunity in its newest version to be derogatory to Apple and smear the capability of the iPhone's battery by quoting, Doug Criss, a critic of Apple's battery case to define "Sheeple." LOL! — PING!

Thanks to dayglored for the head's up.

Agree 1000%.Some of us are familiar with a "Freeper" whose profile, curiously enough, shows that 99.9% of his posts are threads started by him/her either in praise of Apple or slamming Microsoft and Android. These posts are always *very* professionally done, almost as if he was an Apple employee or stockholder.

I,for one, like my Windows PCs a lot.I also like my Android phone a lot.I've also liked the last three diesel cars I've owned (diesel being a "niche" market in the US).However,I don't obsess...or even come close to obsessing...over any of these items.I like them,I use them and I'm quite satisfied with them.

To some in this world, and even to one or two here on FR,Apple is a cult.

That’s classic Apple. The reigning Me Too champion but always comes up short when you do a hard comparison.

iTunes anyone?

The biggest selling point of the Apple eco system is the tight control Apple has over it’s delivery network. Android has a lot of crapware in it’s store, atleast Apple has much tighter quality control.

Hardware are comparable between Apple and top end competitors, but the software for consumers are definitely higher quality in the Apple store.

I have a MacBook I purchased in 2007 for $1500 that continues to run flawlessly. It serves my needs for a dependable portable. In 2010 I purchased a Fujitsu Lifebook to run Windows, similar characteristics, for $2400. It also runs flawlessly after 7 years.

Both manufacturers have come out with substantially improved models every year since. So what?

I don't see the point of your comment. So what if a manufacturer offers upgraded models? Nobody is holding a gun to your head to upgrade, if what you have suits your needs.

I’ve been an Apple guy since the 80’s. I’ve used and continue to use Windows machines for work, though. While they’ve come a long way in user friendliness, stability and functionality since the mid-90’s when they finally got an Apple knockoff user interface, Windows machines are still generally crap by comparison, from build quality of the hardware to the sketchy, inconsistent and somewhat wobbly user interface. I’m quite happy with my Apple computers and phones. My software investment is there, my skill base is largely most at home there. I can and do boot up Windows on my Mac when necessary, but that’s becoming less and less of a necessity. So, this “cult” thing appears to be rather stupid, to me. I buy them because they just work better in my circumstance. If you for some reason feel you’ve just got to have Windows or Android, by all means, go get one. I’m not stopping you. But, please stop trying to stigmatize what works for me and has worked well, for decades.

“there are excellent refurbs for a great price due to their egos.”

Sorry, not going to get somebody’s sloppy seconds keyboard, if you know what I mean.

I do have a MBP, bought new of course, but it is not spec heavy and cost just a grand, just there so that I can take it when traveling or in public — can’t be caught using anything else in public.

My desktop is a custom PC with Linux, Windows, and Hackintosh. Mostly Linux for work, pc for gaming, and Hackintosh for a couple of creative projects. Similarly priced Mac pro would cost a fortune.

There was a time when a lot of hobbyists and enthusiasts built radios, too. I remember Radio Shack. If you derive satisfaction from a self-build and don’t mind a cobbled together appearance, then it works for you, and good for you. But, the world at large has moved on.

With iPhones less is more. This pleases a lot of people that just want it to do certain things and if they have a problem they can walk into the apple store and have it resolved.

Conversation with my neighbor.

Samsung phone is waterproof. “My iPhone camera is better”

Samsung has NFC. “My iPhone camera is better”

Samsung has better camera. “My iPhone camera is better”.

Samsung has replaceable batter. “My iPhone camera is better.”
