Freedom Caucus drives dagger into heart of young Trump Presidency
FOXNEWS Opinion Section: Elizabeth Peek ^ | March 24, 2017 | Elizabeth Peek

It is hard to overestimate the damage the Freedom Caucus has done to the fledgling presidency of Donald Trump, and to the country. By blocking the American Health Care Act of 2017, the conservative group has guaranteed that Americans will struggle forward under the burden of Obamacare. In the next few months insurers will announce their premium hikes for the coming year; chances are, given the continuing withdrawal of major companies from the marketplaces and the ongoing failure of the bill to attract enough young and healthy participants, the new rates will not be pretty. Last year premiums went up 25%; it’s likely the increases will be higher this year.

Republicans will own those higher rates. Their failure to repeal the financial underpinnings of Obamacare and start replacing that failing program with an approach that encourages competition and that embodies numerous other common sense reforms will mean that families hit by ever-higher costs will blame the GOP. Voters elected Donald Trump and a GOP Congress to get this job done – the number one promise of every Republican campaign since 2010...

By the way I am in agreement with Sundance over at Conservative Treehouse. The uniparty wants single payer and that’s where we are headed unless something drastic happens. The GOP want single payer as much as the Dems do. Otherwise they would have passed a full repeal.

What was most surprising in this whole episode, and a brief episode is all it was, was Trump's vocal support for what amounted to Obamacare dressed up in a Republican suit.

Consider what the story would be if he'd opposed it. Trump at war with his own party. Trump acting out like a spoiled child. Trump is wannabe dictator and king who wants Congress to kowtow to his whims. Now, having supplied Ryan with the rope and fitted the noose Trump can shrug, walk away, and announce that he'd done everything he could to help but Ryan failed. Trump's president till at least 2021, but Ryan is Speaker by consent of his peers and he just embarrassed the Hell out of them. And the metastasizing debacle of Obamacare still rests on the necks of the Democrats.

There was no simple repeal and return to market based and common sense solutions on the table, so this was the best outcome possible.

I agree with Trump. Trump said just about 10 days ago that the smart political thing to do is let ObamaCare fail on its own.

Well, that is going to happen now. Thanks to Ryan's moderates like Dent from PA who failed to back Ryan as well as most from the Freedom Caucus.

Exactly. The Status Quo Caucus is making fools of conservatives.

They’ve known for over 4 months that Trump and a Republican congress would be in control.

What have they done?

What are their accomplishments?

They are all field and no bat. That’s the minor leagues.

But they are heroes for some reason for killing a crappy bill.

Wake me up when they pass something. Hell, they won’t even try to get rid of Ryan.

I completely agree with you. And We are in the minority here at Free Republic. This was a tremendous defeat for our new President. More than our side realizes. Momentum is key.

I’ll tell you what- if McConnel doesn’t change the rules and push Gorsuch through—— well —that’s the ballgame.

I see nothing happening to Obama for his spying, as well.
I’m feeling pretty pessimistic when I see people on our side cheering along with the commies that our new guy lost a big one.

It’s about victory and winning. Not hypothetical possible victory later. You win these one at a time, they stack up — and momentum picks up speed.

Trump needed this one. badly.

And Freepers are cheering. Amazing to see and disheartening in the extreme

So posting videos of Trump’s own comments is now considered #NeverTrump.

Now? Probably not. During the campaign? Probably so.

When was this infraction of yours?

I seriously doubt that you got put on timeout only for that one post...

Do you hate Trump’s Conservative Pick for the Supreme Court?

Or was his pick too liberal too?

Exactly, the base is being duped and is thrilled with achieving the status quo.

The Democrats could have done that.

In commercial real estate, which I have done as well as startups, deals fail about six times. Bad deals happen when you don’t have walk away power. Trump knows all this. He didn’t ven break a sweat at the Presser.

It looks like the Freedom Caucus are nevertump - they were promised campaign funding by the nevertrump Kochs if they voted no. Read the comments linked on post 13.

Actually they were not nevertrump.

Majority of Freedom Caucus Supported and/or Endorsed Trump (10 early supporters prior to convention, plus 7 after GOP convention).

3 gave tepid support, 3 unsure, and 5 AntiTrumpers...

Don’t believe me? read ...http://heavy.com/news/2017/03/who-are-the-members-of-house-freedom-caucus-list-of-representatives-do-not-support-health-care-bill-donald-trump/

From what I heard, they are not bankrolled by Koch brothers. Koch said they would support them after Trump threat to primary them. Not the same thing as being nevertrump.

Blame should go to the feet of Paul Ryan for putting forth hhis “Better Way”** Rynocare bill, not the Freedom Caucus.

**Ryan Introduced his Better Way initiatives to compete with Trump’s agenda during the campaign. He did not support Trump agenda. Ryan has never been a supporter of Paul Ryan and I will say I don’t think he would care if Trump were not President.\

Not sure why you posted this to me...I am well aware, as is everyone here paying attention, that Koch brothers said they will provide re-election campaign funding after Trump threatened to primary anyone not voting for the bill.

You know, I love Trump, was on the Trump Train as soon as he announced, went to Rallies, made donations, etc. However, I was not pleased with his threat against anyone who did not vote for the bill...That is not how an “outsider” who wants to clean the swamp should be working with Congress in my opinion.

I don’t love Ryan and did not appreciate him claiming the bill vote was a “binary choice” for the entire House—that is how GOPe and insiders do it. I thought the bill stunk to high heaven

My post to you was focusing on the fact that the Freedom Caucus actually had majority supporting Trump during the primary and/or general election. They were not and are not neverTrump.

But they had enough votes to stop something from happening. Now all Trump needs is 30 Democrats to make them irrelevant again. And that’s what is likely to happen.

So then Ryancare wasn't bad enough. Let's get 30 Democrats and make it worse.

Unbelievable.

>> It’s about victory and winning. <<

Funny, I thought it was about saving our Republic. Bush can point to "victory and winning" on No Child Left Behind because he convinced Congress to pass it. Did that help us?

>> if McConnel doesn’t change the rules and push Gorsuch through—— well —that’s the ballgame. And Freepers are cheering. Amazing to see and disheartening in the extreme <<

Put those two sentences together and your statement makes sense. Trump wants to push Gorsuch through immediately and its amazing and disheartening to see FReepers cheer that on. Obviously they've learned nothing from the last 40 years of "strict constructionist" judges that GOP presidents pushed for and got the Senate to rubber stamp for a lifetime job despite doubts about the judge's "conservative" views

>> Trump needed this one. badly. <<

So whatever Trump needs, the Senate should give him? My president, right or wrong?

Yep, some member of the Freedom Cacucus should put the EXACT same bill back into the house queue and very publicly solicit sponsors to add to the bill. And privately, call every single Republican who previously voted for a repeal to remind them of their prior vote and how well Republican voters support such a measure.
