A huge well of molten carbon that would spell disaster for the planet if released has been found under the US.
Scientists using the worlds largest array of seismic sensors have mapped a deep-Earth area, covering 700,000 sq miles (1.8 million sq km).
This is around the size of Mexico, and researchers say it has the potential to cause untold environmental damage.
The discovery could change our understanding of how much carbon the Earth contains, suggesting it is much more than we previously believed.

So true. The establishment is so blind. They lack wisdom.

Abiotic petroleum, anyone?

Are they referring to OIL, Black Gold, Texas Tea? If so...Jolly good.

I guess we need to devote all our efforts to building a planet sized fire extinguisher.

There is that theory about oil being from non-organic sources....

No such thing as peak-oil.
There's a group of geologists who have, for years, subscribed to the idea of abiotic oil, that oil is not formed from decayed animal remains, but is created as part of geologic processes within the earth.
Maybe this molten carbon lake is one of the sources for that process.

The whole fossil fuel narrative is just poppy-cock. Out in West Texas, wells formerly thought to have been depleted were found to be full once again when revisited years later.
The earth is manufacturing oil..ur ur carbon. We are not running out of oil.

Carbon in the liquid state? CHEM 101
All of these are held together by very, very strong chemical covalent bonds and that means that you need to heat up elemental carbon a huge amount before you can actually start to separate those atoms. In fact, once you heat it up to about 3,600 degrees C, you finally get to pull those atoms apart and it turns into a gas: it sublimes; so it normally goes from a solid to a gas. If you want it to be a liquid, you have to put it under incredible pressure while you're actually heating it up that much. So, it's only under very, very extreme circumstances that you can force carbon to be a liquid.

Wow, sounds like they found a whole ocean of crude oil, but its 217 miles below the surface, bummer.
