Instead of collectively spending $100 billion annually under the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement to combat global warming, developed nations should consider investing just $9 billion in a marine cloud whitening project that could prevent global warming for the rest of the 21st century, according to Bjorn Lomborg, director of a Danish think tank.
Marine cloud whitening mimics the effects of a volcanic eruption by inserting salt particles into the atmosphere to make clouds denser so they reflect more sunlight back into space.
Spending just $9 billion on 1,900 seawater-spraying boats could prevent all the global warming set to occur this century, Lomborg, director of the Copenhagen Consensus Center, writes in a January 18 column for Project Syndicate, adding that the benefits the project would generate would be worth an estimated $20 trillion.

A barge can be built with the equipment powered by sun, wind and waves to spray the water. Such a barge could be built for under 1 million. 190 of them for 190 million.
The other 8.81 billion is to pay off the concerned activists, most, but not all, of whom can be bought off.
A side benefit to spray is that more water will evaporate into the atmosphere. If these are located upwind from deserts, there will be more humidity, and more rain on the dry areas. That will cause more vegetation to suck up more CO2.
An alternative is to shoot reflective confetti into orbit. It could be selectively located to cool the polar regions or wherever.
“...that more water will evaporate into the atmosphere.”
Water vapor contributes about 95% of the greenhouse effect.
Water vapor is almost entirely from natural sources (99+%)
And I like your reflective confetti idea. As long as it is biodegradable. Back in the 70’s when everybody was worried about global cooling, some “experts” thought it would be a good idea to cover the ice cap with coal dust and oil to absorb the heat from the sun to keep the earth warmer.
Thank goodness they didn’t do that!
If I can get the barge equipment maintenance contract and travel the world keeping the barges functioning, you’ve got my support. Just make sure that all 190 barges are placed in lovely destinations with beautiful beaches nearby.
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
I have read of the idea of putting sand in the atmosphere to help with warming. I wonder if salt is better and would it have the same effect.
It’s a brilliant idea, and best of all shuts down the politics of the global warming debate and profiteering.
For the low low price of only 8 billion I can prevent global warming, and save the tax payers 1 billion!
Short of setting off a big volcano, I don’t think we can do much to effect the weather. At least not on a global scale.
Nucking Futs. That covers it.
You broke it, you bought it...
Start screwing around with the atmosphere and get some nasty unforseen consequences. We ain’t God.
I’ll do it for 50 billion. 50 desalination plants along the African coast. Run the water inland so people will have clean water to drink and grow crops. By further greening of Africa, they can be the cleansers of CO2. In addition, all that water being taken from the ocean will prevent Africa from tilting over.
Really it is the coffee shop.....
The problem is that if we are wrong, and our real risk is global cooling, we’ll have killed ourselves trying to protect ourselves.
Why does the Law of Unintended Consequences come to mind? What could possibly go wrong?
If they’re going to start doing this we’re going to have to sink all those boats.
As usual, most commenters on this thread haven’t read this very thoughtful article. Note this essential quote from Dr. Bjorn:
People are understandably nervous about geoengineering, Lomborg acknowledged. But many of the risks have been overstated. Marine cloud whitening, for example, amplifies a natural process and would not lead to permanent atmospheric changes switching off the entire process would return the world to its previous state in a matter of days.
What’s “thoughtful” about trying to come up with “solutions” to a nonexistent problem?
Just paint Rosie O’Donnell white. She’d reflect enough sunlight to start a new ice age.
