Love that song. A timeless classic. I consider it to be the song that started the musical renaissance that was known as the 80’s. Yes, I know it came out in 1979, but it was the song that ended the dark ages of music, aka the 70’s.

Whenever I hear that song, I think about the Three Mile Island incident of March 1979. There was a partial nuclear meltdown that occured in a reactor at the Nuclear Generating Station in Dauphin County, Pennsylvannia.
Plus, of course, the song was great and very original in many ways. Even Debbie’s chosen style of singing was unique. It reminded me of female singers in the Roaring 20’s, during the Jean Harlow era. Nobody else was doing that then.
Blondies songs were great for the Roller Rink, if one was inclined to jump into Roller Skates.

{sigh}
Why couldn’t I have met her in 1981?

The video starts out with a night view of the World Trade Center. Now I'm pissed off. I never noticed that in the video before.

The TV show “WKRP In Cincinnati” was the first to play this song. They weren’t supposed to. Due to rules of the day, radio stations were designated to air it first. Just happened to be the next record on the stack on the TV show. Wasn’t going to be unveiled to the public for another two weeks.

Awesome flashback to the dawn of the 1980s.
I always thought this was Blondie's best tune:

The first 30 seconds has some nice time capsule film of late 1970s NYC.
Ground-breaking and valid case can be made that it was the song that bridged the 1970s to the 1980s. "My Sharona" by the Knack was probably the last monster song of the 1970s but unlike "Heart of Glass" it stayed in the 70s.
"Heart of Glass" would still go to number 1 even if it was released today.

Whenever I saw one of her videos I was always amazed that she had such a bunch of dweebs in her band. LOL.

The only thing missing from that time capsule clip is this pair of buildings:

That's #96 and #98 St. Mark's Place on the Lower East Side. They became icons in New York City lore first when they graced the cover of Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti album, and later when the were part of the set for the video of the Rolling Stones classic "Waiting On A Friend."

Anyone who knows about Debbie Harry knows that she and her band were punk rockers. But punk did not pay the bills, disco did.

I did meet her about then. Got my signed LP like a bunch of others at CES, but the pen quit so we had a little chat while a replacement was found. Basically, she was bored. Understandable.

What I like about Lilly Allen is that she sings with her British accent.
