Capsaicin (the thing that gives hot peppers their 'hotness,') has been shown in some studies to slow or perhaps reverse the buildup of plaque in the arteries, but it will not stop a heart attack.

The thing that fixed me was a stent to open up the blocked artery. Had I not heeded the warning signs, my wife would have found out why the blockage in the LAD is referred to as "the widow maker."

As for the Co-Q10, I take supplements.

.
Capsaicin has stopped thousands of heart attacks.

It also stops hemorrhaging.

For many, it also ends tinnitus.

Your stent will eventually result in a serious stroke.

Could be. While I think there are certainly hereditary factors in a lot of diseases, I also think that bad nutritional advice contributes also. Weight Watchers was not as bad as some of the programs, but of course, did not buck the low fat theory.

In fact, fat and protein are necessary for the body to trigger the satiety elements in the brain so that people aren't hungry. Too much insulin not only interferes with this, insulin actually increases hunger.

Chronically high insulin levels can eventually lead to a situation where the signals are to send the food you eat directly to fat storage, instead of to the cells to get what they need, so that the whole system is basically needing nutrition, and thinks it is starving.

It's like the income tax. You need 2000 per month to pay bills, but the government takes more, and only leaves you 1500, so then you have to get a job to do some more work to bring in the extra 500.

What amazed me, was that some fairly recent studies were done to try and demonstrate that the Atkins diet was not healthy and would increase blood lipids. So they divided people up into groups following the Atkins, Mediterranean, and Heart Healthy low fat diet.

Atkins worked better than the others, for weight loss as well as bringing the lipids to healthier levels. Atkins has been very misrepresented, as they focus totally on the first 2 weeks. They also make it seem like he recommended that people stuff themselves on fats and meats.

He in fact was treating starchy foods similar to the way that Doctors tell you to treat food allergies. Eliminate the most likely for a while, and then add them back one at a time to see how your body reacts.

Once people lost weight, they were to add back carbs 5 or 10 grams at a time to see what their body could tolerate. Many people just go back to eating exactly what they ate before the diet, and then wonder why they gained the weight back. The answer is found in the hormones: insulin, leptin, and cortisol.

Adequate protein, healthy fats, veggies, fruits are all part of healthy diets. Excessive starches are not. Between meal snacking can also pack on the pounds, as it keeps the insulin level up for an extended period, and the snacks tend to be inferior in nutrition - like Twinkies, cookies etc. I am convinced that the best way to bring down healthcare costs is for people to go back to eating a healthy whole food diet-hopefully before healthcare/entitlements bankrupt us.

I know one must have fat to round out the diet, mother was weird about it. Don’t know why, she was 5-7 and never went over 120. When she died, she looked like an Auschwitz survivor to me. Oh, well...

You mentioned she smoked. Did she have some sort of COPD? When you say she was weird about fat, do you mean, she avoided it as much as possible?

Ma smoked Raleigh studs forever. Got some nice stuff with those coupons, but they didn’t offer an iron lung. And she died from a smoking-induced heart attack. She just avoided fat, for her figure. But one can’t avoid it all, drain it off the hamburg, etc, just common sense. Gotta use a couple TB full to make a great gravy, though...

Saturated fat is very necessary for healthy lung tissues. Avoiding starches and processed foods is more effective for weight control than fats.

In fact, adequate protein and fats are needed to signal the body that it has eaten enough, and allow fat burning instead of fat storage.

More and more is being learned about the body’s mechanisms, and actual studies published in the Journals of medicine and nutrition etc. have shown that the USDA pyramid was a turn down the wrong path.

The new guidelines have eased up on total fat, and eggs IIRC, but they defied the scientific advisory committee and kept their restriction of saturated fats. Real fats such as butter from grass fed cows are not the problem.

Fats made from highly processed and chemical processes are not healthy. Margarine with trans fats, oils such as corn oil and soybean oil are examples. Pure lard without all the additives is even healthier than these “manufactured” fats.

Olive oil made from pressure is ok. Fats in nuts are great. Clarified butter is good for higher temp saute etc.

Agree completely. I use butter mostly and olive oils sparingly. Probably should clarify some butter for cooking as well.

I’m going to experiment with that after Thanksgiving I think. Clarify some butter. If I wind up with some pork fat from roasts, I may trying some rendering to see if I can get some lard that doesn’t have chemicals.

It really does make the flakiest pie crusts, and the holidays is one time that I do make some sweets, though I don’t eat much of it due to the sugar and carbs.

I also like coconut oil for a few things.

Lard makes the best Grammaw pie crusts in the history of the world.

NOTHING else compares. About once every four months, make a pie. Just to enjoy...

LOL. I’m too lazy to do it that often. We used to have a little ole run down restaurant in an adjacent town that made the best coconut crème pie, just like my granny use to make. They went out of business a few years back.
