Samsung, CPSC Recalling 2.8 Million Top-Loading Washing Machines Due to Risk of Explosion

Samsung and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission are recalling 2.8 million of Samsung's top-loading washing machines after reports that 730 units exploded, resulting in nine injuries, the CPSC announced today on “Good Morning America.”

“We’re talking about ... a very serious hazard of the top of these washing machines completely blowing off,” Elliot Kaye, the chairman of the CPSC, told “GMA” Investigates in an interview that aired Friday on “GMA.” “It is a lot of reports.”

Kaye said the tops of the affected units weren’t “secured enough based on a design failure. And the top just completely blows off.”

The recall affects 34 of Samsung's top-loading models that were sold from March 2011 to November 2016.

ABC News first reported on the risk last month following a year-long investigation into Samsung’s top-loading washing machines.

They don’t blow up. They just shake themselves apart if they get too out of balance.

If you have one, you can check it out at https://pages.samsung.com/us/tlw/index.html.

You can also schedule your repair there too, or see their other offers.

What is it with Samsung and exploding appliances?

We’ve had one of their refrigerators for about 10 years.

No problems....yet.

Since it’s a shaking issue, it may be a Hillary thing.

First their phones, and now this ????

They aren’t cheap either. We looked at a Samsung washer and dryer, but we couldn’t afford them.

I watched the video. It looks like bearing failure in the spin cycle. The machine catastrophically fails. The likely culprit is probably cheap Chinese knock off bearings in the supply chain.

Some muslim probably got the idea to wash their suicide vest before using it so they would look spiffy when they meet their 72 slightly used virgins.

Just bought Samsung washer and dryer 2 months ago.
Not same model on recall. No problems so far.

They play a little song when cycles are done.

Some have actually caught fire and exploded, blowing holes through walls. I'll go with the evidence.

Actually, these ARE the cheap, top loading models.

Thanks for posting this. Our washer is affected.

We scheduled for service a week from Tuesday. We get a one year warranty along with the repair.

I am guessing that my front loading Samsung washer is okay. I probably will not stand in front of it when on spin cycle, nevertheless.

Depending how the bearings fail, i can see how they might start on fire.
