Weird Stories Thread

I know that many of you think I am a total nutcase. I thought about this today, and have decided to ask if anyone has some really strange stories. These are true events in their life that not even a fiction writer would touch. I have several. Maybe that's why I'm half crazy. Anyway, it's Friday night and let's play a bit.

As an aside, I just had a very strange, never before on FR thing happen to me. When I clicked the button to reply, instead of going to the blank reply box, I was taken to the top of the thread. It happened twice in a row. It was almost as if someone or some thing was attempting to prevent me from replying. Anyway, back to your story. This may sound crazy, but have you tried talking to this ‘person’ and asking them what is it that they want from you? It needn’t have been out loud, but even in thought.

Hotel del Coronado is a notorious haunted property - it was partly the inspiration for The Shining

My Aunt and Uncle, both now deceased, had an interesting experience decades ago. Year unknown, probably the 1960s.

They had a cottage in Deale, MD, right on the Chesapeake Bay. They would spend the winter in Florida, driving down there sometime in the Fall.

This particular time they were somewhere between, going down this one- or two-lane (?) country road with very high banks on either side.

At some point, something jumped from one bank to the other, right in front of, and above their car.

Neither one said anything for a while, then one asked: “Did you see something jump across the road back there?”

“Yes,” the other says.

“What did it look like to you?”

“It looked as big as a horse, with wings.”

I never got to talk to them about it before they passed.

I knew that, and it always kind of spooked me.

That happens to me quite a bit. I think it’s a flaw in the software, but I’m not qualified to say what, exactly.

The Missing 411 books really creep me out too, and I’ve now read all but the latest one. I live about 30 miles south of Yosemite in the Inyo National Forest and I too have hiked the Muir Trail, alone, I will never do that again.

I heard the cell phone message too on the ABC News website, scary stuff. We have lots of Search and Rescue operations around here every year and they almost always find a missing hiker (dead or alive), but sometimes they don’t and the SAR people are stumped by the lack of clues.

It was felt that during my lifetime the disintegration of our country would be seen. At that time the decision was made that I would never take responsibility of bring another victim into existence. A vow kept.

What weird sentence structure! And what's with the totally unnecessary use of the passive voice? "It was felt?" "The decision was made?" Ranks up there with former White House Chief of Staff John Sunuunu's "Haircuts on the Bahamas were flown to."

How about:

I gradually came to the conclusion that our country would probably disintegrate during my lifetime. I decided that it would therefore be unfair / immoral to bring children into such a world. I have kept that vow, and remain childless to this day.

Just went to your FR page and saw that you're a proud Texan, so I'll give you a pass this time! But don't let it happen again! :-)

It stands to reason. There are what, 200-odd national parks, many of them vast and covering extremely rough, remote terrain. At the same time, thousands and thousands of unqualified people feel comfortable going into the back country because they have some subconscious notion that this is safe...It's official, it's run by the good ol' US government, there are friendly rangers at the gates smiling and waving. So in they go. And they don't come out, but how would that look if word got around? Not good at all, so they just keep it hush-hush

Yes, read the Missing 411 books, it's not just inexperienced hikers; i.e: a Montana rancher takes his rifle and goes for a walk on his own property that he has lived on for 50 years and completely disappears, never to be found again. No sign of an animal attack, no bits of clothing, blood, flesh or bones found anywhere, all they found was his rifle laying on a path.

One of my logging customers, while giving me a tour of one of his logging sites, relayed a very detailed and sincere story which took about 45 minutes to tell in full.

In summary, he was descending the logging road we were on about six months prior to my visit. As he was approaching a switchback, a humanoid ran full speed downhill from the woods, across the top road, full stride down the 20-foot drop to the lower road and continued downhill. The logger pulled forward as to be parallel to the running path and saw the pale creature pacing around in a small clearing not 30 yards off the road. Suddenly it disappeared.

He is not a believer in aliens, etc., but that night he went to dinner with his best friend and relayed the experience. The friend convinced him to drive him back to the spot. They were able to find the footprints to the clearing and see the prints pacing in that small clearing, but they could not find any exit prints in any direction.

I was honestly surprised at the sincerity with which he told the story and still don’t know what to make of it, as I’m not an alien guy myself.

I was on the stage in the auditorium of the school where I was teaching.

I wanted to hang some props from it for a stage performance.

The school custodian was with me; I had asked him to lower the *boom* of the stage lighting; You know, the one with the yellow, red and blue lights on it.

He was off to the side, and unwound a sisal rope, tied to a cleat on the wall, through a pulley and on to the lighting.

Of course, I was standing directly under the 15’ of lighting, ready to direct how *low* to go.

Suddenly I felt a strong push from the front on my shoulder. I recoiled back, a step or two; the old decayed rope snapped and the light bar came crashing down; smashing in a thousand pieces.

I was frozen in astonishment; looked at the custodian; he made the sign of the cross. He thought, I was a goner, for sure.

It happened so fast. While I am a believer, I had up until that time, never gave much thought about guardian angels. But from that moment hence, I believe in their existence.

That’s my *strange* story, and I’m stickin’ to it. :)

[As a side note, the school was built on the site of the Hartford Circus fire of 1944, where 167 people died.
The custodian told me later, that at night, when he was alone in the building cleaning, he would *hear* sounds of wailing and crying*. Wind blowing?, I don’t know

When my students heard about my adventure, they told me they knew about the *lost souls* that roamed the building. These elementary school age kids said they saw *ghosts* when they went into a bathroom. I wrote it off as hocus-pocus. Campfire ghost stories that got passed around.]

Well, it’s the next day now, I guess I can reveal, although I hope you and any others already knew or suspected, that I was only kidding. I imagine you were as well.

We live in a 19th century farmhouse. One morning shortly after we moved in our 9 year old son said that he had seen an old woman in his room the night before. He said he first saw her standing by his closet looking at his clothes and that she had come over to the side of his bed where she smoothed his covers as if tucking him in. Then she left the room. He was very matter of fact about her being there, saying he had not been afraid because she “seemed nice”. Our son was not one to make up stories or lie so we were not sure what to think. However since that first visit to our son, we all have stories about the woman who shares our house.

...was just my attempt at fabricating a good, campfire-like, per-Halloween ghost story, like this one linked below from the Andy Griffith Show, where Opie, his friends, Barney and Gomer were all sitting around a campfire listening to Andy telling such tales. The episode was titled “Back to Nature”.

The clip is 3 mins, 45 secs, and is only of that one scene.

You didn’t start the thread and you didn’t tell a story, so what were you “kidding” about?

I suspected that the thread poster himself is a joker. So was just having a little fun. Hope I didn’t offend anyone who actually was serious.

There’s probably a lot of FReepers out there with actual tales to tell. Might be a good subject to pursue, especially since Halloween is coming.
