I know that many of you think I am a total nutcase. I thought about this today, and have decided to ask if anyone has some really strange stories. These are true events in their life that not even a fiction writer would touch. I have several. Maybe that's why I'm half crazy. Anyway, it's Friday night and let's play a bit.
Yeah, I used to hike alone too, until I read the “Missing 411” books. Never again. The chapters on Yosemite Nat’l Park are really scary.

I used to room with some guys who were season Park Service rangers. Apparently the way the system works is they work for a park for six months and then their term expires, but once you’re in the system it’s much easier to get another seasonal gig at another park, so most of these guys would work for one park after another just for the experience and new places and what-not. Some of those guys had some freaky stories...Catch 22 for me, as I don’t really believe in that stuff, but at the same time have a hard time discounting the sworn experiences of people I would trust with my life.
“Not strange at all. Read the Missing 411 series of books and you will see what I mean (read the reviews on Amazon).”
I’ve read a couple of them. They make you never want to go in the woods again.
And one of my favorite things is to go to the local wildlife refuge and take pictures. I often never see another person.
Personal stores not many have been told.
Driving alone on a Saturday afternoon, stopped at a red light. Heard my brother say “(my name)don’t” It was clear as a bell, his voice. Needless to say I was shaking and found it necessary to pull into a lot and compose myself. After all, we were expecting dinner guests that evening and there was so much to do to prepare. The incident remembered, and put in the corner of my mind, but forgotten for the evening. Sunday evening late a phone call - my only brother had committed suicide.
Another tale - since junior/high school and studying Civics, I realized that our government has always been one of balance and nothing permanent. It was felt that during my lifetime the disintegration of our country would be seen. At that time the decision was made that I would never take responsibility of bring another victim into existence. A vow kept.
There are others but none as powerful to me as these two.
Are you positive you didn’t hear any other footsteps, perhaps in front of you, or off to the side?
Quite a while back I remember listening to a very detailed episode of Coast to Coast on the subject of just how many people go missing in national parks. Evidently the numbers are suppressed. Gave me the willies.
I’ve had similar things happen to me. Once was in heavy fog in England, other occasions here in the states in the woods.
What can happen sometimes is the sound of your footsteps can reflect back off of fog or foliage, but if you stop it should stop also. If you stop and you hear more than a couple more footsteps then it’s not that.
The last time this happened I listened for several minutes until I was absolutely sure of what I was hearing and where it was coming from.
Okay, thanks.
Next time you’re out walking have your phone tap tehe walk...
Next time you’re out walking have your phone tape the walk...
I live in a very rural area in the West and have hiked and driven in 4X4s all the Sierra Nevada Mountains and camped in very remote campgrounds. I too have seen very strange things that I can’t explain.
I was interested in dating a young lady once. She and I were casual friends. I asked her once what her ideal date would be. She told me that she was absolutely sick of dinner and a movie, followed by a nightclub(s) date. So I had to think of something unique.
So I asked her out. I drove her to the Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island just offshore from San Diego. Instead of going to the restaurants, nightclubs, etc. I took her upstairs to the top floor (4 I think).
Then I found a service door. It was locked. I told her to look the other way, then smashed open the door. (yeah I was kind of a beast, but a happy beast).
Anyway, we found access to the roof. So I smashed that door too, and we gained access to the roof. We spent the next several hours running around the roof and listening to guests having sex. Then we heard something we did not like at all. It sounded very bad. It was a total buzzkill. I ended up taking her home and never saw her again. I don't know what happened in that room, and I don't want to know.
When you said in your post 18 that “it sounds like one person right behind me trying to intimidate me”, what exactly leads you to believe the person is trying to ‘intimidate’ you? Think hard. Your answer could be very important.
Here’s one under the category a one in 200,000,000 coincidence. I was seated in a Starbucks (this was before I swore off ever going there) having a coffee when a man carrying a briefcase walked up to my table. “Are you Richard,” he asked. “Yes,” I replied. He then asked, “Richard and stating my last name?” “Yes,” I replied: He had stated both my first and last name correctly, but I had never seen or spoken to him in my life. It just so happened that he had a client with exactly the same name as I, who was to have met at that Starbucks at that precise time. The odds against this happening has to be in the same range as winning a super lottery, or perhaps even more unlikely.
I heard that too on Youtube, with the author of the Missing 411 books, David Paulides.
Because they come on me with a sort of deliberation but, won’t pass me. I slow down, way down, I still hear the steps clearly and they have a different cadence than my own. If I stop I hear a few more steps behind me that fade quickly away. Silence. I start up again and within a few moments it comes on again. I walk the trail almost every day and in six years it’s happened four times.
Carlos Danger ?
My sister tells of an incident during which she was walking down a hall in her house when she suddenly felt hands grasping her shoulders firmly and pulling her back. She forcefully wrenched herself free of the grasp and turned to face the intruder. You guess it. There was nobody there.
