If it floated, it was needed. Half a million New Yorkers were rescued by a Coast Guard-led fleet of tugboats and yachts. When disaster strikes, ordinary Americans help fellow citizens......

The Cajun Navy..
Doing what Americans do - helping each other
State Government - getting in the way of self-help
American Red Cross- suing for Trumps donations to Baptist Church (self-help) during crisis ! (WTF ?)
My first response to this statement was that the Dunkirk “boat lift” was the largest in history. If the 500,000 person figure quoted here is correct, and I’ve no reason to doubt it, God bless them all. Never forget. Never forgive.
Thanks for posting.
Watched the video, shared it with my email circle.
After 15 years the true extent of the tragedy recedes. The video renewed those memories and strengthened my resolve to MAGA.
I will never forget what was done to my city and to Americans in the air & on the ground that day, nor will I forget the bravery that was demonstrated by ordinary Americans who risked and in many cases gave their lives to rescue and protect others.
In 1956 we were visiting my grandparents in New Jersey.
Upon hearing that the Andrea Doria was sinking, I went with my father and grandfather, in my grandfather’s fishing boat, to the scene of the sinking ship.
I remember that we fished a man out of the water and then headed in to shore. I always wondered what the man said to us. He spoke only Italian and we only spoke English. I was 10 at the time.
THANK YOU Roccus!!
Amen JayGalt! We were living at 120 Greenwich St, that day, which still stands today. The only thing that saved our building and our dog (who was left behind until the next day) was the 50 story black Deutsche Bank Building that was ultimately condemned and torn down. We were not able to move back until December but we decided not to move back and moved uptown instead. Can NEVER forget......
You’re welcome Churchchillspirit...and thank you for sharing it with others!
Cuts into the Red Cross profit margin.
You went from New Jersey to Nantucket to help look for survivors and there was one alive when you got there?
We went from Bradley Beach New Jersey toward the ship along with several hundred other small boats. When we arrived about a half mile from the ship, we only found one passenger, other boats found others.
I think the actual collision was off Nantucket, but it was about 45 minutes later on the way back to New York, that they decided the ship was going to sink and needed a rescue effort.
The Wikipedia account of the Andrea Doria details how many survivors each of the large rescue ships picked up. Nothing about one guy getting fished out of the water by a fishing boat that made it up from New Jersey. You should add that to the Wiki.
Also provide details about your grandfather’s hydrofoil fishing boat,
It was 60 years ago, but I’d swear that I saw a dozen or more small motor boats with one or two survivors each. It’s a good thing this all happened in the summer, there could have been more casualties if the water was cold. Also, the survivors were deposited along the nearest beach and greeted by hundreds of people who were waiting with coffee, soup and blankets.
Tom Hanks narrated a short video about the rescue. It was about 15 minutes in length and was posted to FR a few months ago. It was nicely done!
Cool. That’s like a 6 hour ride one way!
