Dozens get sick after eating ghost peppers at Ohio middle school

The incident happened during the lunch period, and the district was still working to determine how many students were involved and where the hot peppers came from, said Superintendent Brad Ritchey of Milton-Union Exempted Village Schools.

Police and emergency crews were called to the school on Milton-Potsdam Road. The investigation revealed all involved students “took these peppers voluntarily,” according to police.

In total, five students were taken to local hospitals and approximately 40 students — ages 11 to 14 — had ingested the peppers.

“The response of emergency services was amazing; deputies and help from surrounding paramedics … we really had a lot of help here this afternoon,” Ritchey said. “This was serious but sometimes situations at schools become far more serious than this.”

Ritchey said symptoms ranged from blotchy skin, hives, tearing of eyes, sweating and general discomfort.

Cody Schmidt, an eighth-grader at the school, said he tried one of the peppers and it was in fact “really hot.”

“Got some sushi a couple days ago , made the mistake of putting a little of the pretty green condiment on it. Wow!!”

I took a pal to eat sushi for the first time and warned him about the wasabi which he laughed at.

Took a large amount of it and went catatonic for a moment, then inhaled deeply through his nostrils and said, “My God, I can smell in color!”

I use a quart of Texas Pete, pour out about 1/4 cup and replace it with dried, crushed Thai pepper. The dried peppers are lightly roasted or toasted to bring out the flavor. Homemade chunky hot sauce.

Ancho peppers would work.

I believe the Carolina Reaper is the hottest pepper going, scoville scale 2,200,000, in case someone is dumb enough to try. Yes current record holder. The "designer" of the pepper, though, has some news ones he will release in 2017 that are 3.3 and 3.5mm scovilles. They are hybrids of the Reaper. He is trying to perfect them before certification at various labs. 3.5mm will probably produce some interesting videos.

Those girls were idiots. Water makes it worse. 2% or whole milk help......a little.

Anaheim is about my limit.

I enjoy thai peppers in my cuisine, and if used sparingly, the habañero. When eating at a Thai restaurant, I'll ask the waiter if they could please prepare my dish "Thai hot" since they'll almost always cook things to American tastes, even if you say "I like it spicy".

One thing I always keep in my kitchen for cooking is Korean Gochugaru:

Excellent for soups!

“So, there really is a ‘Ghost’ pepper.”

Yes, I grew these monsters for several years and the symptoms in the article are standard for eating one on its own. Severe discomfort.

Ghost pepper is a general term referring to one of a family of peppers from southeast Asia such as Bhut Jolokia, Naga Morich, etc.

As for the hottest, ‘Ghost’ pepper has been surpassed several times in recent years through experimental cross-pollination of various peppers. The current record holder for heat is the “Carolina Reaper” at 2.2 million Scoville, over twice the rating of the ‘ghosties’.

My wife did the seed cleaning and soaking with Thai chilies when she first began to react poorly to hot food but still loved the flavor. It worked. Your jalapeño recipe sounds good. I’m tempted.

I mix in some other cheese varieties, including Parmesan and a bit of mayo. Add a few garlic cloves to the pan.

I'm just not a hot pepper person. A little mild heat is all I want in BBQ, chili, etc. I've just never learned to enjoy burning the heck out of my lips and mouth, etc., let alone some of the symptoms described for these peppers.

Love hot peppers and used to grow several varieties every year. This year I have a peach ghost pepper that is super hot. I need to make chili as these make anything hot, like soups or crockpot surprise meals.

Travelled in Thailand and thought I knew hot Thai food. Went to a Thai restaurant in Portland OR and ordered a 4 star out of 5 star on the heat scale dish. The waitress asked if I was sure as 4 was pretty damn hot. Told her I had been to Thailand and could handle it.

My eyes were watering and my nose running but I ate every damn bite. Cook came out of the kitchen to watch.

Never did that again.

I sense that the dreaded "Triple Dog Dare" may have been at work here.

I use a potato peeler to get inside and clean out the pepper seeds. I also like to use the whipped cream cheese or softened variety vs. the harder ‘bar’ of cream cheese.

Enjoy!

I don’t eat hot peppers of any kind. My dad did and he would. complain of having Mexican heartburn. That is when you eat something that burns going in..............and it also burns coming out!

Oh dude, my coworkers late mother thought the ball of wasabi was green tea ice cream when he took her out for sushi the first time.
