Penn St adds plan to mark Paterno debut; sparks fury online

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State’s athletic department on Thursday announced plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Joe Paterno’s first game as coach, a move that sparked backlash on social networks by people critical of Paterno’s role in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

The university announced plans Thursday to mark the anniversary when the Nittany Lions football team hosts Temple on Sept. 17.

Athletic department spokesman Jeff Nelson told The Associated Press that Penn State plans to announce specifics of the commemoration to ticket holders during the week of the game. He declined further comment on the plans.

Paterno coached at Penn State for 46 seasons, becoming college football’s winningest coach. But the coach was fired by the school’s board of trustees shortly after Sandusky, who was his defensive coordinator, was arrested in November 2011 for child sexual abuse. Paterno died in January 2012 of lung cancer.

The announcement to honor Paterno’s first game was met with disdain on social media sites from those who partially blame Paterno for the scandal.

I'm kind of an old buzzard. I find it hard to believe that Paterno knew and believed what Sandusky was accused of, then facilitated it. It seems like something so far off of Paterno's radar screen as to be non-existent.

Heck's bells. I'm an ancient Catholic and was probably in my forties before I realized that some Catholic priests were and are quintessential evil. I was an altar boy and a seminarian and was never propositioned a single time. Besides being an old buzzard, maybe I wasn't that attractive when young.

I suspect Paterno was dumbfounded about Sandusky and just wanted to do football stuff.

I doubt Paterno was a child molester or liked child molesters. My guess is he had a tremendously positive influence on many young men who were smart enough to take what Paterno had to offer.

He likely doesn't care anymore, but his life deserves accolades, not derision. If I had a son with football talent, I would have felt confident if he played on a team coached by Paterno.

My intent was not to imply that Paterno was covering up for the perv Sandusky.

We will never know exactly what Paterno knew, and when.

If Paterno had been informed about what Sandusky had been up to, and relayed this info to someone up the food chain, then Paterno did what what was required. How vigorous he (Paterno) went after this is the open question. Further, how vigorously did the higher up pursue this?

I try to view this in the prism of putting myself in that same position. If a longtime associate of mine was accused of being a pederast....how would I respond? Obviously, the knee jerk response is denial. How could X do such a thing...I don’t believe it, I’ve known him for Y years.

After that you kind of see how Paterno, would be uncomfortable. Tough spot for him to be in, and you can appreciate his trepidation.

It’s clear now that Sandusky was a disgusting degenerate, but I don’t think that Paterno was a co-conspirator.

Agreed.

I also lived in the area, as my family was from that area.
While State College has the population of a small city, it is really a small town in the midst of a huge transient population. The story then was in the local paper (CDT), and discussed multiple times on the morning talk radio show. Anyone who didn't already know (and yes, apparently there were lots of rumors AND people who worked there and knew things) knew after that. After it was dismissed as baseless, that talk went back underground. A local psychotherapist warned law enforcement repeatedly, based on information from some of her clients, that there was a Sandusky problem. I don't know if they made an official report, or just said ‘thanks’.

Nearly every local person either worked for the university or had close relatives who did, as it was BY FAR the largest employer in the area. The University environment did discourage any employee (and through them their family members) from making waves, and that probably included local law enforcement.

“You can choose not to believe what everyone with any objectivity knows to be true.”

I don’t consider joe to be a saint.

You say it is objective. Yet you do not know what Joe did or didn’t do and I don’t know either. I have only read that when McQ talked to Joe, Joe reported it to his director.

I thin Penn State should drop football. Cannot believe they still want to memorialize and honor this animal.

Wow, he reported it to the director? What a stand up guy. And when the director did nothing he shrugged his shoulders and went back to winning football games because that's what he did. He didn't lift a finger to stop the brutal raping of children in "his" facilities. What kind of man has the power to stop children from having their lives ruined by a serial child rapist and doesn't do one thing? Joe Paterno was scum.

You can ignore the testimony of the numerous victims who told authorities that they initially went to Paterno about the actions of Sandusky and how Paterno chose to ignore their pleas for help because he had football to worry about. Paterno and his beloved university put their football program and reputation above the lives of a large number of children. You can defend them if you want. I won't. I will, however, celebrate the fact that one of them has received justice while many more are lined up for theirs.

That’s the part you don’t know. Can’t know unless you were with Joe to see and hear. I wasn’t, so I don’t hang people when I don’t know. If you do, that’s on you.

After Sandusky retired his name never came up for any of the many coaching positions that were opened. Nobody even bothered to see if he was interested in coming out of retirement.

Joe Pa knew? Hell yes. Everyone knew.

Paterno did good things and set high standards for his players, many of whom went onto success in their lives.

For some here in PA, Paterno was “God” and the feelings still run strong. I am not part of that religious fervor about Joe Pa.

Joe said he made mistakes at the end, but I want to remember the good things he did, too.

News Flash, Jerry Sandusky is married and has kids. He even molested his son numerous times in the family basement.

Now about Spanier, before he was hired by Penn State to be it’s new president, a warning was given to the PSU administrators that he was not a good fit for State College. The warning was given by officials from the University of Nebraska, his former employer.

The first thing Spanier did when he got to Penn Sate was announce that he wanted to make Penn State the most gay friendly university in the WORLD!

He approved of numerous LGBT student initiatives through out campus. He organized and funded the annual lesbian C*nt festival held on university grounds. You heard that right. They actually called it The C*nt Festival.

In his PhD thesis, he wrote about the pleasures of wife swapping and the swinging lifestyle. He also admitted to the press recently (in an interview) that he was molested as a child and that the experience gave him special incite to the homosexual mind.

None of these allegations are a secret. You can research it yourself.

It would not surprise me if Graham Spanier was a bisexual cross dresser. He belongs in jail along with his degenerate repulsive lover Jerry Sandusky.

No. They should just leave him in quiet repose facing his Maker. Unless Sandusky talks or some other absolutely hard evidence either way surfaces, Paterno should neither be honored nor vilified.

The joke was widely enough known that the university food service had an ice cream flavor named after Sandusky before the scandal broke. Banana and nuts with a caramel swirl. Coincidence?
