STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Penn States athletic department on Thursday announced plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Joe Paternos first game as coach, a move that sparked backlash on social networks by people critical of Paternos role in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
The university announced plans Thursday to mark the anniversary when the Nittany Lions football team hosts Temple on Sept. 17.
Athletic department spokesman Jeff Nelson told The Associated Press that Penn State plans to announce specifics of the commemoration to ticket holders during the week of the game. He declined further comment on the plans.
Paterno coached at Penn State for 46 seasons, becoming college footballs winningest coach. But the coach was fired by the schools board of trustees shortly after Sandusky, who was his defensive coordinator, was arrested in November 2011 for child sexual abuse. Paterno died in January 2012 of lung cancer.
The announcement to honor Paternos first game was met with disdain on social media sites from those who partially blame Paterno for the scandal.

These molestations were apparently going on for years, it was bad enough to take down Joe’s statue and now they are going to honor him? Wow!
we can never know what he knew about Sandusky
No way should they honor him, or anyone else that served on the staff at that time...and ‘Sanduck’ should be put in a cell block with a bunch of rapists and they should do to him what he did to those boys...
‘Sanduck’s’ wife even knew what was happening in the basement of her house and didn't say a word, she needed the money from ‘Sanduck’s’ retirement you see...
Child rape facilitator Paterno is not someone deserving of respect.
The main thing I remember was the statement: “We can’t ruin the name of the college”...that came out in the trial.. and I remember what you remember, they said that she was ‘after money’ he was one of the boys that finally came out after a few others did...
I could not believe that they would put these boys through that all for the name of a college...SMH!!!
Sandusky retired from coaching football in 1999.
The allegations were not disclosed publicly until 2011.
I had heard rumors about his pedophilia way back in 1997 when a mother filed a complaint about him to the police. At first, I did not believe the accusations. It wasn’t until a second mother filed a complaint in the year 2001 that I realized the guy was a homosexual predator.
Then in 2004 when Mike Mcqueary told Paterno he saw Sandusky showering in the Penn State facilities with a 10 year old boy, this is what caused the alarm bells to go off.
Some of this was reported in the Blue White magazine without naming names but everyone knew who they were talking about.
Lost in all the turmoil is that the Penn State University President was a big closet homosexual himself. He had a very strict school policy protecting homosexuals and encouraging homosexual behavior throughout the campus.
Graham Spanier created a reign of terror against anyone who objected to the militant homosexual agenda.
Paterno was probably too afraid to speak out about Sandusky because he would have been called a homophobe.
How do you know what Joe knew, exactly, or what he did or did not do?
And with all of that, how DO WE KNOW that Joe himself wasn’t taking turns??? We don’t, but ‘birds of a feather’ syndrome ...
He told me he was shocked. He said Sandusky was the players favorite coach. Said he'd have never guessed what came out. He was a player in the late 80s.
Was you there? What do you know your not telling?
The twits in Twitterverse thrive on outrage.
I don't know anything, other than the rumors that were unsubstantiated.
I'm asking exactly how you know what Joe knew or did.
Paterno could have run for governor of the state and won. He had nothing to fear from shutting down the rape factory that had become his program. What kind of a world is it when grown men won't defend children being sexually assaulted by other grown men right in front of them? There's a special place in hell for these people and it pleases me to know that JoePa is where he belongs right now. Sandusky will be joining him shortly.
I know what he said, about he didn’t know anything, was never told, blah, blah, blah....the heck he didn’t know...
They all knew, the whole staff at that College knew what was going on, it was an open subject, and now ‘Sanduck’ wants out...NO WAY...
All for the sake of a ‘name of a college’ wow that really helps doesn’t it???
Take that as my answer, if you weren’t there and didn’t read and hear the talk about it, you wouldn’t know...there are some of us that were there, and did hear and did have conversations with people that did know...
First, you need an open mind. Then you need to do modicum of research. It's all out there if you want to find it, and if you are willing to believe that JoePa isn't the saint so many want to believe he is.
John Doe 150 told Paterno that Sandusky raped him with his finger. Paterno told him he had football season to worry about. Back in the late 80's another coach caught Sandusky in the locker room with a young boy. Sandusky had his hand down the boys pants. Again, Paterno dismissed the concern. And don't tell me you haven't read about what McQueary told Paterno.
Paterno knew everything that went on in "his" locker room. That was told to me by my football playing roommate my freshman year in Happy Valley. You can choose not to believe what everyone with any objectivity knows to be true. JoePa burns in hell for not doing everything possible to stop the rape and abuse of young boys under his nose.
“we can never know what he knew about Sandusky”
Fully? No. But we do know what he was told by a witness and we know he did go to a higher up about it. He knew something was going on. How much? We won’t know that. But he knew Sandusky was seen raping a boy.
I’m not beating up on Paterno. I’m just pointing out the truth.
Guilty by accusation.
Stalin would be proud.
“Lost in all the turmoil is that the Penn State University President was a big closet homosexual himself.”
That’s a new one on me. Did his wife and two children know?
