Apple will unveil the next iPhone on September 7
Techcrunch ^ | August 29, 2016 | by Romain Dillet

Apple just sent out invites for a press conference on Wednesday, September 7. The company will most likely unveil the next iPhone. The invite doesn’t say much. Apple usually likes to give hints — but this time, it just says “See you on the 7th.” The event will be held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. This large venue has already been used for the WWDC keynote in June.

For the past three years, Apple has unveiled a new iPhone in early September. Everything indicates that Apple is going to follow the same pattern this year with a new iPhone. But what do we know about the iPhone exactly?

Many leaks show that the iPhone 7 (or whatever Apple calls it) will feature more or less the same design as the iPhone 6s. The antenna lines at the back will be streamlined and the camera will be a bit more prominent. And yes, it looks like the audio port is going away.

For the bigger model, Apple could introduce a dual-lens camera system. Two cameras could let iPhone users shoot better photos in low-light conditions — it could also improve HDR performance and color fidelity. Or it would let you use an optical zoom with two different angles. We don’t really know yet.

Apple could also use this opportunity to unveil new MacBook Pro computers. There have been many rumors about an upcoming MacBook Pro with a Touch ID sensor and a curious OLED mini screen above the keyboard. The Apple Watch should also receive an update before the holidays. Will it happen on September 7 or later? It’s unclear.

TechCrunch will have a team on the ground to liveblog, take photos, shoot hands-on videos and more. And if you don’t plan to buy a new iPhone, iOS 10 is also coming in September. Read my preview to find out what’s coming your way.

They sell giant iPad pros for $799 at Sam’s, or at least they did.

phones have become like cars. A few incremental improvements a year and one year a big jump and repeat. The tech industry is based upon impulse and “need” to have the latest. I usually skip a least one model and sometimes 2. I have yet to see an improvement or upgrade, I absolutely had to have. The only time i bought a phone early was when we drove by the store and there was no line the first day and ended an iPad anyway.

Two cameras? Cool.

Maybe 3D photos?

If you’re having a problem go by an Apple Store for trouble shooting. You will get a quick few minutes of time for initial troubleshooting and settings checks and if necessary it will be sent to the back room techs for repair or for warranty replacement if this is still in effect.

SM, do you know if the SIM for the 7 is the same size as it is for the 6? When I switched from the iPhone 5 to the IPhone 6, I had to get a new SIM with a new number, because the 5 SIM would not fit in the 6. It was only a minor inconvenience, but I couldn't keep my old Globe number.
There are only 3 cell phone companies here, Globe, Smart and Sun.

Maybe 3D photos?

I don't think they are far enough apart. More likely double the light gathering capability and electronic registration of the photos for low light.

".. This is an announcement for a limited seating venue, it is not open to the public.."

Sounds like the very definition of "elitist" to me.
I guess if the Drones aren't waiting in line with their money taped to their foreheads "The Mothership" is disinterested in the unwashed proles.
So let's build the hype and get on with the free ad campaign. Compliments of the "World. Wide. Press."

Not much of a sense of humor, eh? How "progressive" of you. So much for a l'il fun and meaningless-but-jovial brand-name heckling. **sigh**
My resolve is strengthened.
Cya round, fanboy. d;^)

PS- It's a phone, not a lifestyle. You've got Apple pajamas, dontchya. d;^D

It should be or they may go with an built-in SIM system that is universal for all carriers. They've been talking about that for a couple of years.

They have to bring out a new phone as the current has bad screen and the company is being sued over it.

What a strange era, that a naysayer chooses to to declare future automotive superiority between a library index company and a telephone manufacturer.

I'm surprised that Apple is actually going to go ahead with eliminating the headphone jack (apparently).

If that is the case, I'm thinking they will also announce wireless bluetooth headphones and ear plugs. High quality ones. I know that they are available now but as of now, they are inferior to the wired ones.

“A fool and his money are soon parted.”

That just might hold true for those who buy laptops on the cheap. Those that buy $1,000 laptops might get two years out of them. That's $500 per year. The Macbook Pro I got six years ago for $2,200 is still going strong today. That's well under $400 a year and after six years, it still blows today's $1,000 "cheapies" out of the water.

No, minnesota, it's not the current Apple iPhone models that have lower than 1% failure rate with a reported soldering problem. It is the two year old model, the iPhone 6 plus. The latest model is the iPhone 6S and 6S plus, and a later model iPhone SE. None of those last three have shown any problems at all.

Apple has sold over 250 million iPhone 6 models since its introduction in September two years ago. 1% of that number there would have to be 2.5 million of them to have failed from this failure mode and it hasn't even reached to the multiple tens of thousands yet. There are a lot out there, but it is a minuscule fraction of 1% of the iPhone 6 model produced. It is just that when there is a problem with Apple, it makes headlines. It is also FUD season due to the new iPhone being released on September 7th, so the press looks to publish anything negative about Apple that will generate clicks for advertising. This is one of them.

Apple ALWAYS gets sued over every small issue with repairs that hit more than a few phones after the warranty expires, especially if it gets any press. The normal failure rates for all consumer electronics is around 2.5% to 3%. This particular problem is, as I pointed out, under 1% of the iPhone 6 Pluses out in the wild.

It's likely any lawsuit won't be granted class action status for lack of standing, because that is usually what happens on these repair suits. They don't go anywhere because the plaintiffs have to show knowledge on the part of the defendant that the device was defective when it was first sold. A less than 1% failure rate almost two years down the road is not one that would lend itself to any proof of advance knowledge.

There are questions being raised about whether it is a design flaw at all that is causing the failure. It's possible its caused by regulatory requirement to use non-lead containing solder which after a period starts to grow "tin whisker" crystals which will start to short out across the very small distances required between the solder joints where these IC chips are connected to the printer circuit boards. Lead tends to inhibit the growth of these whiskers.

I think they will provide an adapter for the Lightning port for regular 2.5mm earphones.

Apple Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Unresponsive iPhone 6 Touchscreens
http://www.macrumors.com/2016/08/29/iphone-6-touch-disease-class-action-lawsuit/

The defect presents as a gray flickering bar at the top of the screen and a display that’s unresponsive or less responsive to touch. The problem is said to be caused by the touchscreen controller chips soldered to the iPhone’s logic board losing contact after a period of normal usage.

Well, you do need to be honest: the Samsung is pushing over twice the pixels - a MUCH higher resolution screen. That does mean it has to move over twice the amount of data.

And of course, the question is not “is it the fastest”, it is “is it fast enough”... Once a phone reacts fast enough, beyond that is irrelevant.

Like moths drawn irresistibly to the light so are a class of non-Apple owners driven to Apple related threads to compulsively and derisively comment on folks who have freely become owners of Apple products. I’ve never been able to understand the strange psychology driving this compulsion.

"Invitation only", eh? Hehehe.

I work - literally - kitty corner from the venue. I can get some pictures if you like (taken on a Note 5)!

Well, the iPhone 6 Plus is STILL a current model, you can still buy it: iPhone 6 Plus in the current lineup of 5 models. Is it the newest model? No. But it is a current model since it's still for regular sale by Apple.
