If you've ever seen a friend have good results from a diet but then not been able to match those results yourself, you may not be surprised by new findings in mice that show that diet response is highly individualized.
"There is an overgeneralization of health benefits or risks tied to certain diets," said William Barrington, Ph.D., a researcher from North Carolina State University who conducted this work in the laboratory of David Threadgill, Ph.D., at Texas A&M University. "Our study showed that the impact of the diet is likely dependent on the genetic composition of the individual eating the diet, meaning that different individuals have different optimal diets."

Well as Mark Twain so eloquently put it: My habits protect me but they’ll liable to assassinate you.
I heard that everybody that has ever been on a diet will die, is that true?
My son is doing the Atkins. Went from 360 to 345 in about 2 weeks. That is impressive.
“I heard that everybody that has ever been on a diet will die, is that true?”
Hmm, you might have something there. I know that when I’m dieting, I sometimes feel that I might expire. ;-)
It’s weird... I did low-carb and went from 145 to 120, but then I couldn’t get any lower. I switched to vegan and went to 115. I dunno.
The low carb folks have always claimed that carb tolerance is a very personal thing.

The problem with Atkins is that you burn an equal amount of lean tissue as you do fat. I had a former employee that was a semi-pro football tight end and he used Atkins to loose his large muscle mass since he couldn’t maintain it once he stopped playing.
A better low carb diet is Ideal Protein. It maintains a certain level of protein with limited carbs but still has you eating 4 cups of vegetables a day. I lost 65 pounds in 6 months on that. It’s an easy diet as long as you stay away from the BLTs (bites, licks, tastes of things not on the diet -”oh, I’ll just have a bit”).
I went low-carb and went from 297 to 215. I then gained some of it back, but I’ve been stable at 235 fit a few years, now.
Easiest way to lose weight there is.
15 lbs. is great... just don’t touch the Atkins brand of foods... Dr. Atkins would roll over in his grave if he saw those with his name on them.... also... don’t reintroduce the carbs. Atkins came close to the answer.
The body will take its own time to heal and will seek its optimal operational weight. The optimal thing is to keep your blood sugar level normal. Check out “Wheat Belly”.
It’s true. It doesn’t matter what your diet is.
#1 cause of death: Life!
I’ve pretty much been on the Atkins diet my whole life. Long before I’d ever heard of Atkins.
The beer throws it out of whack.
Insulin triggers fat storage when too much carb/sugars hit the body all at once. That is its job, it saves you from dying of sugar overdose.
Normal people have a teaspoon of sugar in the gallon/gallon and a half of blood in their body.
One 12 ounce soda quickly puts 10 teaspoons of sugar into your body your liver and pancreas have to kick into overdrive to deal with so your blood, sugar doesn’t spike so high you go into a dibetic coma and die.
Read a book in 96, Eat For Your Type (Blood Type). I’m A+ it said i should be a vegetarian. Too late. The book made sense if anyone wants to check it out.
In all my years of yo-yo weight, I’ve come to realize it’s not the number on the scale - but more importantly to be getting the nutrients the body needs, as I did the weight came off, not much extra effort in terms of exercise.
It’s not about carbs, protein fat, it’s about various parts of the body need vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc, etc.
I learned it’s best not to over do or under do carbs or protein, they both play vital roles in long term he alt, I just had to change up some types of protein and carbs I was eating and how often.
There’s nothing new about body’s or how they work (usually) I learned to get back to basics of food prep and less of the ready to go or box stuff. Burn a few calories in preparing it too!
I finally figured this out a few years ago...fat, protein, veggies work for me. Have a friend whose 98 yr old mother ate lots of sugar, carbs...every one is different.
That being said, I've been on Atkins for 16 years. I was never overweight, but as I got older, I noticed that I didn't feel quite right. Blood sugar crashes and so forth. I started Atkins and within the first month, all of my negative symptoms disappeared and I eventually dropped to a 19 BMI and have been able to maintain this very easily ever since. Do I miss bread and sugar? Not really. I've somewhat forgotten what "junk" food tastes like. I'll take a rib-eye and salad with full fat dressing over a cupcake any day.
I like beans with my low carb diet. So sometimes I get up to the 20+ grams and sometimes below when i don’t have beans.
Read every version of atkins, but I’m lazy and i have type 2. Now I’m 55 days into it, my loges before was 47, twice. I feel great. Energy all the time, one size down, and sugar under control.
It was ashamed how the medical folks treated him, but after he died it was like some artists, all of a sudden he was great.
