The conversion rate of currency, to the choice of the expat’s locale, may allow them a more ‘cushiony’ lifestyle, than what their retirement check would provide for them in their home town.
The years I lived in Thailand provided me a currency exchange of 20 of foreign currency to 1 of our dollars, when the average yearly salary was less than 400 in foreign currency!!!

Maybe because it is my natural right to seek Happiness wherever I may find it?
For me it’s always come down to ONE basic element on this issue. IF those who no longer live in the country but decide to bash the living you-know-what out of OUR nation, that is where I draw the line. That single issue is what gets under my skin and causes me to question the ‘Americanism’ of said ex-pat.

I live outside the borders of the US because that is where the mission field is. There are over 250 languages in the province where I live and most do not have a written translation of the Bible. When their pastors say, “Turn to Romans 8:1,” the congregation cannot do that. The congregations have no means of discerning truth from error as they have no standard against which to check the teachings. I am part of the translation teams by teaching the children of translators, providing an education for the children and thereby enabling the parents to spend more time on the translation tasks. We come alongside the parents to help raise and nurture the children in the admonition of the Lord.
That is why I am an expat.

Working abroad is IHMO different that choosing to leave the country simply because you think things will be better abroad. If you made that choice, and you could be right, but you are no longer a real American. Just my take on things.
I ran into some expats living in Tokyo when I was there. I never asked what they did but I guess working for an American/UK company.

Do you realize that there are some areas where the best academic programs in the world are not found in the U.S.?
While I can follow the argument that one cannot ride two horses, pick one, do you realize that the U.S. has made it extremely difficult, time consuming, and expensive to choose to be a citizen of another country and cease being an American? Maybe you could actually do something to contribute to your desired outcome by lobbying from inside the U.S. to make this easier.
Moreover, the U.S. also lays claim to the children of U.S. citizens born abroad. Are Americans citizens who elect a government, or property of the government?
Your opening sentence fits many people, myself included. If part of being American means being under God, and America is under God, it does sometimes mean being called further afield.
