The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
20-some years ago we had a Thai pepper plant. Overwintered it in the garage and replanted it next year in the garden with a bunch of leaf/horse manure mulch. OMG! The peppers were so hot that only a local Laotian family could eat them. I lived in Thailand for 3 years and have been married to a Thai lady for 37 years. I know hot. But it is also very flavorful if done right.
“it is also very flavorful”
That is the key for me about peppers! Tried a Ghost and it was so hot that it actually had no flavor to me. The Thais are just right. And so easy to grow!
Crazy weather , similar to weather back in 1976, with extremes in temps and rainfall.
The nation is awaiting milder temps coming out of SW; weather trough coming in from texas - cooler temps trying to go east.
What Joe calls "Discontinuous retrogression" - whereby temps and weather pattern and ridge moving westward, rather than eastward with the prevailing winds.
9 days out with cooler temps than normal remaining in NE; Will have to watch tropical moisture coming out of SE in about 10 days .
Spring transition will lead to "sudden summer" , once it takes hold , it wont move on, and will stay hot.
Temperatures Globaly : Global temp is still going to be the warmest on record - it is a temperature fight of the oceans with El Nino - it is NOT catastrophic.
This May will be the warmest on record, because the Atlantic and Pacific have changed their temperature cycles; it all levels out.
Oceans back in the 60's and 70's, especially in the Atlantic, were colder than normal. Oceans temps are merely a cumulative of temperature variations over the centuries.
Water vapors is the main global gas to consider in regard to land temperature variations; the temperatures of the Oceans "rule the roost" .
Hi greeneyes. Please remove me from your ping list. I have been attempting to get Jim to close my account, so far without success. Thanks.
Why? Are you NeverTrump?
I think it works best if the ground is fairly dry. I tried it a few hours after a cool rain shower the other day, and it didn’t seem as effective. The main thing is to have the water as close to a boil as possible, and to pour only an inch or two above the center of the plant. If it is a BIG dandelion, I also do a spiral out from the center to get more of the leaves scalded. Yes, it will smell like you are boiling a veg. :)
OH, and be very careful not to use the water treatment too close to plants you WANT - or on sloping ground. I just use it on walk ways and in the places we haven’t planted yet. A bit in the yard too - but have to be careful to avoid pouring on the grass. I like it for the edges of my garden too - where the fence meets the ground and it’s difficult to weed well.
Well yesterday was wasted. I went to a farm auction hoping to come with a manure spreader, but there was a Mennonite farmer there who wanted a manure spreader too. I ran it $250 past what I’d intended to pay and decided that he needed it worse than I did so I let him have it.
I did manage to come home with 12 foot aluminum V-bottom boat that Mrs. Augie wanted, and a few bundles of t-posts that I needed for hanging trellis mesh.
Spent most of this morning helping Pops with stuff around his place, then got a 250x2 foot row ready for cucumbers.
Anyone have a DIY way to get rid of the large red ants? I have a mound that I’ve tried everything on and it won’t budge.
Thanks....
It snowed last night at highest peaks where I live.
Slow & glorious spring here & temps dipping during the day w/some off & on rain to continue this coming week
Please do! See my Garage Sale ad on my FB page. I’ll be there Th-F-Saturday!
No reasonable offers refused, LOL! :)
I am using a gel bait that is harmless to pets and birds.
The ants bring it home to the queen, and hopefully, kills the nest.
Then, there is this slightly more dramatic method:

LOL. I hates antz!
Actually that looks like fun and makes a terrific piece of art. I wonder if that’s a fire ant mound. We have fire ants here that you don’t really get rid of, you just move them from one place to another. One thing is for sure, you sure don’t want to get into a nest of them....they could probably kill a small animal.
Is the gel bait something you can find at Lowe’s or a Home Depot?
I have experienced fire ants in Florida...they are NASTY!
The bait is called “HOT SPOT” and is injectable between cracks in wood and pavement.
Home Depot is where I bought it.
Yep, 250’x2 rows. I’m not going to seed all of it in one shot. Think I’ll do 125’, wait two weeks, do another 125’, wait two weeks, and so on until it’s done. That will spread out the harvest and make it a little easier to keep up with the picking. I hope. And be enough to make me some $$$. I hope.
I still have 650’x2 rows that need to be planted in tomatoes. That all needs drip tape and weed cloth laid down, stakes driven, and trellis mesh hung. I was planning to set about half determinate and half indeterminate varieties, but if it the rain doesn’t lay off I’m not going to get it taped, matted and staked in time to plant the indeterminates. If I can’t get half of it ready by this weekend I guess I’ll just forget the stakes and mesh, plant it all to Romas, and pick and pack like a madman when they get ripe. That might not be a bad idea anyway, as it would leave enough growing season to follow the tomatoes with broccoli and cabbage. Maybe more $$$ per row/foot that way?
Your garlic looks fantastic. Mine needs about 45 more days until harvest.
Thank you “left” I appreciate that. I’ll stop by Home Depot and try some. I need a new rain gauge anyway since the hail pretty well totaled mine.
Thanks again!
Your garlic looks fantastic! You should be proud. What do you have at the end of each row? Almost looks like a rain gauge.
Those are empty water bottles on lengths of 1/2” electrical conduit I use for plant supports on our Dahlias. I read that the bottles rattling on the stakes in a breeze will keep the Moles away. I find that the mole Cinch traps are better and longer lasting...
